Emma Silvers had fainted. She had been in this state for several minutes. As she had chosen a corridor abandoned by the usual student traffic, it was very unlikely that anyone would come to find her either. That have been a good thing too, for Emma had fallen unconscious in a very questionable state. She lay covered in white feathers. They clung to her clothes and swum in her hair. She had some grasped in the palm of her hand, some on the bottoms of her shoes, they were scattered all around her as well. The scene looked as if an angel had landed in the deserted hallway, its wings tearing from its body.
She had been practicing non-verbal, wandless magic. Emma had slipped away from her friends, swiping a pillow from one of the common rooms many sofas. She found the hallway right away, for she had been here many times. It was a regular rotuine for the ravanclaw, to take any free second she could manage and come down to this hallway to practice the very difficult magic.
Not including her warm up meditations. Emma had been at it for nearly an hour. She sat still as a statue, her mind entirely focused on the simple levitation spell. Her breathing was deep and even and she was imaging the small pile of goose down feathers on her lap floating. She painted the scene mentally, in much detail even the state of her shoelaces, and especially the position of the feathers themselves.
Suddenly something in Emma broke, and every feather in contact with her body, rose in the air and began hover a few feet off the ground. "I did it!" Emma exclaimed shocked.
Then just as suddenly as the hidden doors had opened, they slammed shut, hard. In fact, they slammed shut so forcefully that Emma grabbed her head, howling because of the sudden, crushing pain in her head. She passed out then, falling sideways onto the floor. The feathers, no longer defying gravity with the assistance of Emma's spell. Danced downward slowly, coming to rest in random places on the stone floor.
It was no surprise that Emma had exerted herself to the point of falling unconscious. After all, besides the usual worries of a teenage witch, Emma was dealing with quite a lot of stress. There was her family, all death eaters, who were constantly ragging on their freethinking relative. The most severely her elder brother James, who had taken to torturing Emma during the summer and the holidays. He hoped to beat her into submission, but Emma was refusing to falter. It seemed actually, that she was becoming more defiant each day. Then there was her engagement.. arranged by her parents at birth. The days until the wedding were crashing down on Emma. She desperately needed to break free. Another reason she had been tired. Emma regularly worked late into the night on contemporaneity potion experiments. She was trying to combine muggle medicine with the already established healing practice. She had even pinned down a cure for the deadly illness that had recently plagued the magical communities children- the only problem is she had used some illegal ingredients, so she couldn't submit it to the ministry for approval until she removed the banned substances from the recipes.
No, It was no mystery why Emma had fainted during her rigorous practice. The real mystery was, why blood had begun to pool from Emma's nose and mouth. It was worrisome indeed. If someone didn't come along soon, Emma would surely drown in her own lifeblood.

Sirius didn’t really know where he was going, which was just another way of saying that he didn’t have anywhere to go. It was that awkward hour of the day where although curfew had not yet set in, most of the students had retreated to their rooms for the night. The dark haired Gryffindor personally couldn’t think of a reason why; not when there were more interesting tings to be done... Like planning pranks and sneaking chocolate from the kitchens. That would have been a perfectly acceptable way to spend the evening in his oppinion.
But it wasn’t exactly a possible one when one of your friends was a prefect and the other was obsessed with the head girl and they both had things to do. There was still Peter, but they’d learned after their first try that neither of them could substitute James’ bravado and Remus’ cleverness. And more importaintly, it just wasn't any fun without them. Apparently it was also against school rules to follow prefect around on their duties, even, Dumbledore has assured, if you were a Marauder.
So if he couldn’t make trouble, he’d decided that he'd just have to go look for some. And that’s exactly what Sirius Black was doing right now, on his own form of rounds about the campus. Just by being himself he had his fair share of enemies. Namely the entire Slytherin house, most pure-bloods, adults, and there was also a good part of the female Hogwarts population. Truthfully any of them would make for an interesting encounter at this point.
That was the type of trouble he was going for anyway, but he’d always heard that you should be careful what you wish. It was as he turned a corridor he noticed the single white feather that his step had moved slightly. And then, a little away, was another. He picked up the one closest to him and followed the trail as they led farther off the hallways students normally stayed on and to the more discrete ones. Were there even classes here? Feather classes? That'd be interesting.
At another turn the few loose feathers had become a pile, and Sirius noticed that in the midst of them, was a girl. More specifically, Emma Silvers. And even more specially, an unconscious, bleeding Emma Silvers.
With a furrowed expression he looked over her body for injuries. The blood was pooling out of her nose and mouth, but she hadn’t appeared hurt otherwise. That didn’t mean she wasn’t though. He had enough experiences with certain dark arts curses to know their effects were less then desirable. If he found out that someone did that to Emma, he wouldn’t hesitate to retaliate.
“Hey. Emma. I don’t know if you can hear me.” He paused, waiting for an answer. “If you can, you need to wake up now.” Another pause, and he realized how stupid he must have looked. “Okay.. well I guess I’m talking to myself. That’s fine.” He slipped his wand out of his pocket. He probably shouldn’t be doing this. There were lots of healing spells and lots of ways for them to go wrong. But a simple one to stop the bleeding couldn’t hurt, he hoped.
He cast the spell and watched as the stream of blood slowed and then came to a complete stop. Why wasn’t she waking up? He hadn’t been too late, had he? No, she wasn't dead.. “Emma..” Right, back to this. Not that he’d ever wanted to in the first place, but he was crossing doctor of his possible career list.

Minutes elapsed. The blood pool from the Ravanclaw's nose and mouth had ceased but she did not wake. While she lay unconscious, her heart was desperately working to circulate blood throughout her body. Her blood pressure rose gradually, as did her body temperature, causing the girl to break out in a sweat. When sufficient pressure returned to her cerebrum, neurons began firing and Emma stirred at last. She opened her eyes slowly, struggling to right herself internally. Immediately she recognized the handsome, dark haired, boy hovering over her. How could she not? Sirius was one of Emma's dearest friends. Much better company then that brother of his, to whom Emma had escaped betrothal by the skin of her teeth. "Siri" Emma muttered, or rather thought she had. Now she was coughing violently, ejecting all the blood that had come to rest in her lungs and throat.
Had she been with anyone else, Emma might have been embarrassed to be gagging and wrenching. Sirius though was one of the few people she never worried about offending. The pair understood each other in ways only self appointed outcasts could. Emma hadn't yet taken the final steps in ostracizing herself from The Silvers the way Sirius had the Blacks. She was planning it though. In fact, she had an application for a flat in London in her backpack this very moment.
Taking deep breaths to regulate her breathing, Emma reached for her bag. Thankfully it was close by. She held her hand out and a bottle of water zoomed into her open hand. No wand waving required. Emma had mastered the summoning charm just last winter. It had taken almost an entire year of practice just like this to accomplish it. Unscrewing the top she tipped the clear bottle to her lips. A cold metallic, saline taste filled her mouth. Taking advantage, she swished the liquid around in her mouth before spitting it behind her. Now she drank from the bottle, swallowing mouthfuls of glorious water that made her feel better immediately.
This entire process had taken only a moment or so, and Emma had almost forgotten Sirius present in the short span of time. Emma was so used to taking care of herself, she never really remembered to look for help. "Hey." Emma said to him, managing a smile. "Do you know how long I was like that?" She half expected her friend to stare at her in shock, half expected him to lay into her. Everyone knew Emma had a problem with identifying her limits. Even the teachers had warned her. Emma however hadn't heeded any of the warnings. She was as determined as ever to do it all, no matter the cost.

There really wasn’t much to do other than watch and wait anxiously for her to wake up. Sirius spoke to her a few more times, but his words had as little effect as they had before to stir her. And then considered that maybe he should take her to the Hospital Wing. He had a deep hatred of the place, but at least there she’d most definitely wake up and be okay. Emma was one of the last people he’d wish badly on. He rather liked her as a person. Though they didn’t have many persona traits in common, they’d definitely been able to reach a common ground on the topic of their families; and that was something even his close friends couldn’t understand. After that they’d become quick friends themsevles.
He grinned widely in relief as she opened her eyes and spoke his name, but then frowned again when she started coughing up blood. Shit, of course, that’s why preventing her blood flow was a bad move. Because is didn’t actually go away; it just didn’t come out. He scolded himself a little, but it wasn’t really the time for that. He couldn’t fix what had already happened, but he could probably do something now to make it better.
Or, he thought, as he accioed water over and took a few deep breaths, he could watch her handle the situation perfectly well on her own. That was another thing the two had in common. Actually asking for help was a foreign language completely. Of course, for him so were most school subjects. Emma was far more studious, always going above and beyond while he settled for whatever required the least amount of effort but still produced fair results.
“Are you alright?” Sirius brought back her –and his- attention from whatever it had wandered off to. “What happened?” The fact that she smiled confused him greatly, but then he listened to her words and it clicked like muggle puzzle pieces. Nobody had hurt her; but she’d passed out on her own accord. Overworking herself. That explained the feathers, the fact she’d just done wandless magic. He rolled his eyes. “Again, Em? If you’re so intent on damaging yourself, at least do it in a fun way and invite me to join you.” Sirius had always been rather good at avoiding the topic of a question. Saying amusing things so that he didin’t have to say that he was truly worried about her for a few moments, and he didn’t know how long she’d been like that before he’d showed up.

Good ol' Sirius. One could always count on him to brighten a situation. Where there was turmoil and tragedy, Sirius Black could be found mending the situation with wise words and good humor. That was to say as long as he wasn't the one causing said turmoil. He was an odd choice for a friend for Emma all things considered. Then again she seemed to have unlikely friends all around. Lily Evans, Severus Snape, and Sirius. the prefect, the outcast, and arguably the most popular boy at school. Dumbledore had once told her that friendships were like the weather- "quite unpredictable".
Emma began to wipe her face with the sleeve of her sweater. She rubbed at her face roughly. How horrid I must look, thought Emma to herself. She supposed it might look as if she had been eating raw meat. This caused Emma's mind to wander to the subject of vampires, and a worrisome article she'd read in the Daily Prophet. Vampires on Voldies side, now that was an excitable rumor. "You can do this with me." Emma told her friend. "Train up with me. Then once we're finished in this god awful place, we can slip away and become super heroes to the non magical world. Have you seen all the attention their comic book heroes get?" Emma of course wasn't being serious. Her application for internship at St Mungos had been completed since she was a forth year. She had no desire whatsoever to be a superhero. The desire to slip from Wizarding society however, that was an entirely different story.
"as it is." Emma told him as she attempted to stand up. "I have slowed down a good bit. I'm getting an entire four hours of sleep a night." she explained to him. "I'm also attending all mealtimes. ooh expect afternoon tea, I'm usually in dungeons with S-- someone" Emma stopped herself just in time. She knew Sirius didn't like Severus or the inverse.
At last on her feet, Emma leaned against a wall and surveyed the mess she had made. She dearly hoped Filch, or his feral flea bag of a cat didn't stumble upon the scene. Hogwarts demented caretaker disliked both Emma and Sirius quite profusely. "Enough about me and my destructive habits." Emma said. "What are you doing wandering around all alone anyhow? No James or Remus at your side, Or Pettigrew following you about. No horde of girls chasing you.. I confess myself worried. Did you do something to upset the population mate?" Emma teased her friend with a grin.

Sirius could tell he’d done the right thing by making light of the situation. After all, it was how he solved everything and it had yet to go wrong for him or those around him. Laughter really was life’s number one cure. Just look at the Slytherins for example. They never really laughed, only those creepy smirks right after they threatened you. And look where they ended up in life. Of course it had its downsides too, in really sad or serious situations. It made you look mental. He really hated that. Almost as much as her next idea.
“Why would I want to study?” he wrinkled his face at the thought of it. He really couldn’t do anything productive unless there was something truly enticing in the immediate future.. The only counterexample might have been becoming an anamigus. But that had been for an important reason that he really cared about. And the results were really indescribable. But the training had been basically what Emma was doing to herself now. Disaster. Not worth it just to be able to perform spells without a wand. He didn’t plan on loosing his wand any time soon.
But then she went on about superheroes, and his interest was greatly spiked. He knew that he wasn’t really planning on doing anything of the sort with her life, but him.. well why not? He could pretend that he missed the sarcasm. “That actually sounds like a lot of fun!” He beamed widely. “Save the word, show off, freak people out, and then get a book written about you. I’d try that. I’d definitely try that.” Not until after though. He needed to play his part in saving the wizarding world first. And he wasn’t waiting three years to train as an auror either. He planned on going straight against ‘Moldywart Voldemort’ as soon as he was out of school. And if he lived through that, then comic book hero he’d be! “Thanks for the idea.” Aka; look what disaster you just started getting yourself into.
At her declaration of self-care he feigned astonishment. “Wow Em, I’m impressed.” Though he was sarcastic, that actually was surprising. He knew that someone like Remus would still be frowning right now, but he’d be a hypocrite to say he took any better care of himself. Sleep and food weren’t all that necessary. It was more like a friendly suggestion that you needed to listen to once a month or so so that you didn’t keel over and die. But eight hours a day? Who had that much time for something as boring as the nothing that was sleeping? Oh new topic! He smirked yet again, eyebrow also raising suggestively. “The dungeons? Do you have a boyfriend I should know about?”
AS she opted to change the subject, he pouted overdramatically. “So we switch the conversation to my destructive habits? That’s not very nice at all.” Some time mid-sentence that frown had disappeared and had hadn’t been able to keep in his laugher. “But really! Prongs is hiding from the new kids and Remus is either on prefect duties or at the library and Peter is either with him at the library or still eating dinner and the girls are doing… whatever girl’s do at this time of day.” He shook his head, not wanting to really know. “I haven’t done a thing. I confess,” he mocked, “I was about to- but then I found you. Thank you Sirius” more mocking, “And now… I’m bored.”
