general appearance Tonks is a metamorphmagus - which is perhaps one of the only reasons why Alastor Moody decided to take her under his wing in the auror training scheme. Since birth she has been able to change her appearance. Initially it was governed by her moods - for example, anger made both her eyes and hair burn bright red, while cooler, calmer moods made them pale into serene blue colours. As she grew older, the control over her appearance shifted away from her moods slowly and into the area of her own free will; but full control was not able to be achieved until rigorous training at the auror academy. Even now her hair and eyes are known to change when sudden moods hit her (again, such as anger).

Her general facial shape and body type has never changed like her hair and her eyes. Though she can change it at will - becoming taller, fatter, shorter, thinner, older or younger, darker, lighter, even hairier, and at great push into a vague representation of an animal or two (with her facial features and bone structure able to change along with everything else) - it always reverts back to a base template, if you will. A female template, curvy but not unattractively so, at an average height of five, eight. She is unable to switch directly between looks either - for example, a disguise of an old lady will not flow seamlessly into that of a young student; when changing to a new form or back from a new form, the 'base template' is always visited first.

But all in all, her appearance cannot be something that can be used to define her. Simply because it does not have a natural form as she can changed any aspect of it at will.

overall personality, Nymphadora Tonks' first impression that she can ever make to anybody is that she is simply a clumsy witch who talks before she thinks. And she is clumsy - Tonks is the kind of girl who, when being polite and pulling out a chair for someone, will manage to knock over the one next to it. She can't actually not be clumsy and loud footed - it appears to be something of a curse, perhaps, which has not to this day been able to be dispatched. People around her, after only a few meetings, will learn to either stand well away or be ready to catch anything. She also has an ability to break almost anything, unfortunately, which certainly does not put her in that good a light with the aurors (as she only managed to scrape through on her Stealth and Tracking exam, with a little help from her mentor and a lot of help from everyone else). And she does seem to talk before she thinks, chatting randomly about many different topics and seeming interested in many things at the same time.

In fact, most people who don't work with her simply call her incompetent.

But she isn't. Despite all outward appearances and the childlike love for pranks and trouble, Tonks is an accomplished auror even with her young age. Being mentored by Alastor Moody has given her a love for noticing the finer details and using them as well as the wider people, and from his tutelage it means that it's actually incredibly difficult to get anything past her. She's tough, but fair, able to stand up with an almost bull like nature when confronted with bullies both her age, older and younger. Like a teenager though, she has a love for punk clothing and the attitude - being incredibly stubborn and often referred to as something of a zebra (in muggle words - as when she gets her teeth into something she is unlikely to let go).

overall history, Tonks was born into a family that was already left abandoned and on its own. Her mother, once Andromeda Black, was one of the three Black sisters who was cut off from her family after falling in love with a muggleborn. She ignored the ancient family traditions and married said muggleborn, resulting in instant dismissal from the Black family. Tonks grew up without any contact from any family members other than her parents and her paternal grandparents, but never really had a complaint about such. Showing signs of metamorphic ability from birth (she was actually born with bright purple eyes and blue hair), she was name Nymphadora at her mother's insistence...though a reason why that name was used has never been divulged to her - besides the fact that it sounded pretty (which always just makes her curl her lip when she hears that explanation). She was always a boisterous, hyperactive and incredibly, incredibly clumsy.

The amount of injuries she suffered through as a child were completely of her own making. Tripping over her own robes, falling off the great mount bookcase, or simply getting her foot caught in the dogs leash and being dragged around in some mud for a bit...it is hard to find anything she hasn't done.

Her clumsy nature did not vanish when she started Hogwarts and was swiftly sorted into Hufflepuff (if anything, it seemed to just grow greater), but as she grew older her joke loving and cheeky, trouble making nature came into play. Despite the fact that she was clever and her grades were always high and consistent, she was not made a prefect in fifth year...because of the trouble loving. But again, that nature for loving trouble, plus the rapidly developing skills of a metamorphic nature brought her to the attention of the most famous auror of the modern era - Alastor Moody.

Leaving Hogwarts, she was accepted into the Auror training school by his recommendation (not with help from her mother's maiden name). She worked hard, bolstered by his encouragement, passing through the Concealment and Disguise module without any study on her part, but then practically having to bribe her way through Stealth and Tracking. She fully qualified as an auror in 1994, and then, on the request of Moody, joined the New Order of the Phoenix as the youngest member; continuing to work undercover at the Ministry after Mad-Eye retired. It was through the Order of the Phoenix that she finally met her cousin, Sirius, and the werewolf Remus Lupin...both of whom enamoured her rather quickly, appealing to her romantic nature as being wounded men that her strength could heal. Not that she ever acted on such a thing, of course.

Tonks was one of the members who also made their way to the Department of Mysteries to follow Harry and his friends, where she encountered her aunt Bellatrix for the first time. She held her own against the stronger, more experienced witch for a good time before being struck down by a curse that would have ended her life if she had not been taken to St Mungo's immediately after the altercation. She was unconscious when Sirius died, and therefore only heard about it from Remus and the others while in a sickbed.

In fact, she was still in St Mungo's when the thing happened. The night before she was due to be realised, pronounced fit again (despite a slightly looser control over the emotional sector of her metamorphic abilities) enough to return to duty, she woke up here.

Taking it in her stride (she's a young woman who can change her appearance at will, bending of reality has never been much of a problem theory for her), Tonks quickly and not-so quietly (more clumsily actually) fell (probably literally) into the job of teaching Muggle studies. With a muggleborn father and muggle babysitters, it was quite a good option for her to go with. Why she chose the name 'Penny Lane' though...is the result of one too many firewhiskey's.
