hair color, Pale blond
eye color, One eye green (right), one eye grayish-blue (left)

general appearance Jo is the stereotypical California beach girl, with white-blond hair, tanned skin, and a sunny smile. Her light hair is feathery and layered, and only comes a little past her shoulders. Normally Jo keeps it down, but she also pins it up and out of her face from time to time. Her eyebrows are naturally a little darker than her hair- she doesn’t need to pencil them in. Jo likes to use eyeliner, but little else. She has a light dusting of freckles over her cheeks and nose, received from years in the sun. Jo’s eyes are the most distinctive feature- her left is a slate blue color, and the right is a yellow-green. Her nose is broad, as is her mouth. However, the shape of her lips makes the wideness seem almost cute. Jo only has hints at cheekbones- her face is oval-shaped, and her chin sticks out just a little. She has a very slight widow’s peak, normally hidden by her hair. Jo will not use nail polish on her fingers, but enjoys painting her toes different colors depending on her mood. (One of her favorite spells is a color-change charm for her toenail polish). While Jo wears the school uniform during the school year, her first choice in clothes outside of Hogwarts is comfort before fashion. Floppy hoodies and sweats, jean jackets and shorts, even the occasional sundress is fine, so long as it’s comfortable and allows her to move freely. While in uniform, Jo manages to give the blue-and-bronze her own distinctive style with pins, brightly colored socks, or more often, bare feet. Jo has bony elbows, callused feet, and a permanent tan. She has scars around her left calf where she was stung by a Box jellyfish on a vacation to Australia when she was nine. Her fingers are usually ink, charcoal, chalk or dirt-smeared, and she has been known to streak her hair with blue or purple. Jewelry-wise, Jo hates rings, but likes bracelets, anklets, and necklaces. Her ears are not pierced. Jo has a multitude of ratty, faded friendship bracelets around her right wrist and left ankle. Her only nice-looking bracelet is a charm bracelet, a tenth-birthday gift from her father. Some of her charms are: a tiny bottle of sand from the beach at Brighton, a small silver starfish, the letter C, a bronze rowan leaf, and a small raven charm. Jo’s favorite necklace was also a birthday gift from her father, a citrine pendant on a silver chain that she received when she turned 16. The pendant is yellow, but has an odd blue streak running diagonally through the middle, vertically.- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

sexuality, Straight
overall personality, Jo is a free spirit- her worst fear is to be caged or kept from doing exactly as she pleases. Her love of the outdoors, especially the beach, is something she shares with her father, a gardener. Jo has never been able to sit still for long- active, hands-on classes like Herbology and Charms suit her better than lectures. She is a pathological tree-climber, and more often than not does all of her homework in a tree overlooking the lake. (She uses a spell to shield herself from rain on overcast days). Her favorite color is yellow, she enjoys pistachio ice cream, and dislikes most teas. Jo is a somewhat average flier, landing somewhere between the Neville-Longbottom skill level and the James/Harry Potter skill level. Freedom is absolutely essential to this girl- she dislikes rules and limitations of any kind. It is often easier to just let her have her way than try to keep her from doing what she wants- Jo is very stubborn, and persistent about finding loopholes to rules. Not that she’s a troublemaker- she just dislikes not being allowed to do what she likes. Jo is terrified of small spaces. She gets dizzy and wild even in elevators, so stuffing her in a locker is more likely to be rewarded by a Bat-Bogey-Hex and some Muggle dueling than any sort of satisfaction. Jo also has a passion for drawing, her favorite mediums being charcoal and sidewalk chalk.
Although on the surface Jo seems to be the average rebel/free-spirit, she does have a deeper side, even if it’s difficult to get to. Her greatest wish is to be a part of something big- she is a great reader of adventure books. Lord of the Rings is a beloved favorite. Jo has a habit of hanging around members of the Slug Club, making friendships and connections for different reasons than Slughorn; she wants to use her connections for when things happen. At first, being a part of a magical world seemed to her like something from a book- she was chosen from millions of others to learn magic. When she discovered that there were other wizards, and that learning the magic was only supposed to help tame it, she was very disappointed. Jo hates being or pretending to be a normal person, especially a Muggle. She doesn’t dislike Muggles exactly, she just has a nasty habit of thinking she is better than them.
Romance-wise, Jo is a flirter. She has had several boyfriends while at Hogwarts, but none of them lasted long. Jo dislikes boys who want more from her than she’s willing to give, especially time-wise. Jo dislikes limiting her options, and prefers to be single. She has never viewed Kingsley Shacklebolt, whom she calls her best friend, as anything but a good friend. The closest Jo will ever come to admitting love is giving her permission to call her Clementine, or Clem. (Only her father is allowed thus far).- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

overall history,
Jo’s parents met during WWII, when they both lived in Hastings, England as children. When the war ended, they were only teenagers, but they kept in touch all throughout their lives and eventually married. Tara, Jo’s mother, was afraid of Julius’s reaction to her magic, so she kept it a secret even from him. As Jo began to display more and more signs of having the same gift, however, Tara began to reconsider. However, before she could make up her mind to tell her husband why the house always ran smoother than anyone else’s, she was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. Not many people were diagnosed with the disease at such a young age, and Tara finally succumbed to the disease at 32. Before she passed, Jo refused to see her in the hospital again, not out of dislike for her mother, but fear; the last time she had seen her mother, Tara hadn’t recognized her. It was too painful for both father and daughter to live in Hastings anymore, so they moved to Broad Street in Brighton a few months after her death. Julius only began dating three years afterwards, when Jo was ten. Jo only calls her father Julius, and they quickly established a household routine.
Jo made coffee and breakfast and kept her room clean, Julius made dinner and did laundry, and they both cleaned the house every Wednesday afternoon. While Jo was at school, they both bought lunch- in the summertime, Julius let her roam around the beach and she bought lunch herself. When Jo received her Hogwarts letter, neither of them knew that her mother had gotten the same letter herself. Jo was hesitant to leave her father, but he persuaded her to go. When Julius and Jo were buying Jo’s wand at Ollivander’s, he mentioned her mother’s first wand (ten inches, vine, unicorn tail hair), and the revelation stunned both Julius and Jo. While Ollivander knew little else about Tara Foyle, Jo refused to give up the search for more information. Jo was Sorted into Ravenclaw house as a first-year, and befriended Kingsley Shacklebolt almost instantly. Over the years, Jo has grown to consider him a best friend. Throughout her time at Hogwarts, Jo has made friends with a wide variety of people- even numbers Ravenclaw and Gryffindor, as well as a few in Slytherin and the occasional Hufflepuff. Jo has gotten relatively good marks in her classes, especially Charms and Potions, and hates Care of Magical Creatures, which she had signed up for without thinking. Jo tried out for Chaser in her third year, but didn’t make the cut, and has since decided she prefers just zooming around aimlessly.
Jo has been in Dumbledore’s office three times. Her first time was in her first year, when she attempted to break into the Quidditch supplies and borrow a broom (Jo’s use of Alahamora always seems to simultaneously give off yellow fireworks), Dumbledore simply asked her not to do it again. She was not caught in her second year, when she broke into Dumbledore’s office to look at the telescopes and odd magical items (she picked the lock the Muggle way). When called to the headmaster’s office in her fourth year for trying to sneak into Hogsmeade on a Tuesday night, (she thought she’d mastered Alahamora finally, but it still gave off incriminating yellow sparks) Jo explained her hatred of being contained. Dumbledore seemed to understand, which Jo found both unnerving for a teacher, and oddly reassuring. He also mentioned that if she would like to examine his telescope again, she would be welcome to ask. She has, for the most part, refrained from major rulebreaking since then, though why she hasn’t is uncertain. It could be from fear of being caught, respect for Dumbledore, or just that she doesn’t feel like it.- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

roleplay sample. If Jo closed her eyes, she could pretend she was sitting on the beach at Brighton, her toes digging into warm sand and not green grass. She could pretend she was in her favorite yellow bikini-top and board shorts, sunning herself briefly before a swim. She could imagine the taste of the sea air, the sun on her face, the smells and sounds of Brighton Pier somewhere off to her right. She could imagine it was a sunny Saturday morning in July, not in October, and she was, as usual during the summer, up early to watch the ocean and look for shells and wade. Jo could even imagine a bowl of pistachio ice cream in the sand next to her, ice chips on the surface, a little melted but not completely liquid yet, condensation pooling on the Styrofoam. But if she tried to imagine Julius sitting next to her, eating an ice-cream cone and people-watching, or making jokes about the American tourists flopped all over their section of sand, Jo had to open her eyes again. Julius was miles and miles away, probably working with his beloved plants. Maybe he was in the greenhouses- maybe he was planting window boxes, or tending to saplings. Maybe he was even on his knees, planting for a client with more money than time, and more lawn than anyone else in Brighton. Or maybe he was clipping the bright sunflowers he sent her every Saturday, cheerful yellow flowers he grew just for his Clementine. But he wasn’t here.
And she was not at the beach.
Jo got up off of the ground, brushing the dirt from her palms and skirt where she had been sitting. Running a hand through her pale hair, she sighed and looked out at the lake. It was so cold-looking, so unfriendly and forbidding. If it had been anything else, she might have been tempted to swim. But it was Hogwarts, and she knew they would have some rule or other against it. Hogwarts was almost annoying that way, with its multitude of rules. You couldn’t do magic in the halls, couldn’t jinx other students, couldn’t fly when you wanted, had to do homework, had to go to class, couldn’t hex teachers who gave you obnoxious amounts of work to do. And you probably couldn’t swim, either. It wasn’t that the blond girl disliked rules- she understood that there was a need for them sometimes. But she didn’t like limitations. Jo did what she wanted, when she wanted, exactly the way she wanted to at home. But Hogwarts was a little less flexible when it came to freedom.
The sun was warm and bright on the breezy September morning, the air just as warm. Jo surveyed the grounds with a crooked smile on her lips. Maybe it was better this way- if Hogwarts had been on a beach, she never would have gone to class. Thinking of the huge, dignified school in the middle of Brighton Pier, Jo giggled. A mental image of Professor Dumbledore in large, flowery shorts and a Hawaiian shirt was too good to resist. Feeling better now that she had laughed over something, Jo picked up her bag and wand and walked back to the school. She saw more unfamiliar faces as she neared the doors- which was odd, considering Jo knew nearly everyone by face if not by name. She found it hard to believe they were “transfer students”. Hogwarts had never had transfer students before, to the best of her knowledge. Although, the transfer teachers were nothing to complain about- she was looking forward to grilling some new faces about her mother. No one else at the school seemed to know or remember much about Tara Foyle, the young Ravenclaw orphan, and Jo had combed the trophy hall and library for mentions of her name several times already. Jo walked inside, the cool, mustiness of the school contrasting starkly with outside. It took Jo a moment to adjust to the dimness, and she set off to the Great Hall. She felt like talking to someone. Anyone. Standing in the doorway, Jo peered into the large room, looking for a familiar face, or maybe just a handsome one…- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
