It was something she had done even as child her mum would come home from a particular grueling day at work complaining about a Mrs or Mr. Someone or another and then she would become silent and then she would request to go out on the balcony and set out the little mat and pail of the enchanted balls and look back over her shoulder at Hannah and with a jerk of her head she would offer Hannah on of the few bonding experiences Hannah got to experience..
Strange that she was desperate to find herself on the tallest tower the school had to offer and that she was quick to charms those silly balls in the same manner she had done the last time she was at Hogwarts.. Then again she felt alienated now even though she was surrounded by people and places she knew she couldn’t escape from the loneliness that seemed to envelope her like some dreadful cloak..
So perhaps it was that desperation that returned to that one thing that felt like home that made her feel she could get through this. That was the thing though she wasn’t to be doing this alone she wasn’t supposed to be alone here. Sadly that was the reality her there were only younger versions of what were friends of her mom that were well strangers and frankly they weren’t even that, they were rude insensitive strangers that were prone to act cruelly to those whom they didn’t know..
Quickly she began to regret the way she had treated the transfer that had come to Hogwarts for the Triwizard Tournament perhaps those Beauxbation girls weren’t so annoyingly arrogant perhaps they were simply misunderstood and well French.. Well regardless of the sincerity of their arrogant behavior the karma fiery had decided to come out of its little hidey hole and wield one fierce punch at Hannah..
She would be out there swearing that she had learn some huge lesson hell she would even allow Dumbledore himself make record of it, if it was the least bit true but Hannah knew herself enough to know that being treated like crap now wouldn’t change how she treated people in the future .
Well there was not a thing she could on that at the moment other than lick wounds and blow off steam and hit a few balls.. She had pulled one glittering ball from the assortment in the tin pail and setting it down on the mat she quickly used the Duro charm to harden an arrangement of reeds that she had fashioned into a putter..
Content with the substitute she had just made she tested it with a good swing. It felt just like the metal putter she had at home setting she reached down and set a small ball on the mat and stood up and fixed her stance and quickly launched the little glittering ball off the tower and into the setting sun where it shattered into a brilliant blue firework before it disappeared as it lowered to the ground below..
With her back turned she was completely vulnerable to the door and who might come threw it as with each stroke she took the inhabitants of the school and why she was there faded into the darkening sky.. 582, wearing, OPEN, Hope its workable |

Astronomy, the study of the stars and other celestial objects. Like a star exploding hundreds of thousands of light years away really mattered in the long run.
At any rate, he had to log the moon's position relative to the constellations tonight, and he could write his essay on the origins of Orion and Cassiopeia later. Honestly, he'd rather just go to bed, but he needed a better grade in Astronomy. He'd been putting it off until the last minute, and the last minute had come far sooner than he'd liked.
Severus shifted the telescope under his arm as he climbed the stairs to the Astronomy Tower. It really was annoyingly out of the way, wasn't it? Honestly, he'd only taken the class because he'd thought it would be easy, which it was, but neglecting to do one's homework probably wasn't the best way to go about getting good grades. Sighing heavily, he trudged up some more stairs.
What he found at the top filled him with dread. Another person... though, he had to admit he was slightly relieved. At least he hadn't been a witness to some romantic engagement. He'd caught quite a few people up here attached at the mouth, or attached elsewhere, as it were. Honestly, weren't prefects and teachers supposed to prevent that sort of thing? If he ever worked at Hogwarts, which he probably wouldn't, then he make sure the Tower was free of sexual encounters.
He didn't recognize the other person, though he did notice it was a girl, by the hair. She was silhouetted in the light of the setting sun and hitting something into the sky, where it exploded into vibrant color. Severus grimaced, but figured it wasn't too distracting. It could have been worse.
Severus set up his telescope carefully and retrieved the parchments he needed to record the positions. Now, all that was left was to wait for the sky to darken enough so that he could read the stars and let them whisper their secrets to him in the night.

However in this moment sound wielded a different power. Hannah was lost in the peace that she felt; she was honestly savoring it, as she knew it wouldn’t last. Then, it happened suddenly. All peace and calm and the relaxation she felt in the air was pulled from her the moment she heard the loud creaking of the door jams. Ohhh that sound, Hannah wasn’t easily bothered by sound unless it was a severe sound, the screeching of nails on a chalkboard or a screaming toddler, but that sudden grinding of Iron on iron was unsettling enough to steal away whatever happiness she had been feeling. Hannah knew she was done for, and knew that she should just write off the weekend. She had no doubt she would be spending it in detention. It has to be a prefect.. Hannah thought grimly to herself, as she attempted to nudge the pail of golf balls behind her. Hannah knew it was basically futile effort as they were not school issued. Hannah knew the rules governing magically enhanced muggle artifacts. So the degree of punishment depended on which prefect had wandered in on her. For a moment she thought she had gotten away with it. She had managed to squirrel the guilty pail of golf balls away from sight. Hannah was proud of herself, well that was till pail tipped over and sent the contents rolling in various directions. Well don’ t just stand there… After several awkward second passed Hannah managed to pull herself together, and quick as lightening with swish of her wand she righted the scene. She made no sound for the exception of the pail righting itself and the soft taps as the balls re-filled it..
She glanced back over her shoulder and was relieved to see that her ‘visitor’ was busily setting up for a night of star gazing. She felt a bit more relaxed about the visitor, because it was evident by his not ducting points that he was not a prefect. In that moment of revelation her intruder simply became a possible annoyance instead of a hindrance to her weekend.
She quickly took in account what was in his set up, and as it seemed more governed for actual work verses a snogfest thinly disguised as studying. His set up was honestly was lacking all the things she was used to seeing in a scene of seduction. He doesn’t even have a squishy blanket, there are no pillows and no candles Everything about him screamed that he was simply out there attempting to study, so yes everything about him screamed harmless. It honestly gave her hope. Hannah knew that if he would allow it than she could help get his work done. Then he would have no reason to stay, and then he would leave her in peace. Now the part she hated, Hannah found her stomach turning at the thought of this introduction her, as her and first impressions never meshed, this was mainly because her nerves always had a nasty habit of claiming her intellect. Hannah walked slowly over to him, her fingers nervously combed through the waves of her blond hair, in an effort to make it look nicer. “ Aye there” Her large blue eyes wide and friendly looking. “I’m so sorry to have not notice sooner that you were studying. I would feel wretched if your marks suffered because you couldn’t concentrate because of me..” With a heavy sigh she dropped down next to him.. “I had a heck of a time finding Piscis Austrini but I was searching for it too late in the evening.. Is that the one you’re searching for? “ 636, wearing, Tag Larry, Hope its workable |

There was a loud crash over in the direction of the girl that Severus studiously ignored. Of course he would be the one to come up here and find someone clumsy. At least she was over on the other side and wouldn't knock is telescope off the side of the Astronomy Tower, Merlin forbid...
That hope was quickly dashed as she began walking over to him. He stiffened before inserting himself smoothly between her and his things. Honestly, they had to be about four hundred feet up, and he was not going to buy a new telescope just because this girl was an idiot. Telescopes were expensive, and he wouldn't be able to afford another one, most likely.
She began to prattle on about what homework she'd done. She was so sorry to bother him, and did he need any help? What a load of rubbish. If she just wanted him to get his work done then she would leave him alone, wouldn't she?
One look at her crest told him differently. Hufflepuff. Well, maybe she didn't know how to leave well enough alone. I mean, it wasn't like he'd ever met a Hufflepuff that was intelligent. Actually, he didn't think he'd ever met any Hufflepuff. But really, why should he? The lot of them were brainless. But... he supposed he ought to be civil to her. She didn't exactly seem like she was trying to sabotage him, but neither did he appreciate her hovering.
"I am perfectly able to concentrate," he replied a bit snidely, giving her a wry glance. "And no, I'm not searching out Pisces... whatever you just said. We have to make a moon chart and calculate when certain stars will align with others. Starting with..." He glanced back at his assignment. "... Pictoris, Octanis, and Lynx. Now, if you'll excuse me, I've some work to do."
He purposefully turned himself away from her to peer into his telescope. Hopefully, she would get the message. Then again, Hufflepuffs probably didn't do subtle. No matter... he would deal with that when he came to it.

Sadly the moment that she made that assumption that she was dealing with an idiot, she quickly regretted it. Nothing like having a bit of your own bad medicine coming back to slap you make you regret your treatment of people.
It wasn't what he said, but how he said it. The tactless contempt that seemed to radiate off of him, seemed to resonate as a trademark of the Slytherin breed. Oh to the joyous nature of snakes she thought bitterly. There was no filtering the long drawn out sigh of obvious annoyance that all but erupted from her.
It was reasonable to think that she would at least be appreciative that he wasn't badge polishing kiss up. The last thing she needed was to deal with a vindictive jerk who could land her in a world of (Menial Job) Hell, for her simply being out there with a pail of clearly illegal things. Sadly that was the thing she might have learned a few lessons. True that past year had seen her grow not just physically, but also emotionally and mentally. Hannah could handle more criticism, and it wasn't the first time someone called her something offensive; However Hannah was still simply sixteen and had her moments of hot-headed anger, and there were still clearly lessons she needed to learn. So clearly appreciation to the scene went overlooked.
Truly I should have been thankful that the little viper didn’t start suggesting that I’m in remedial classes. God they are all alike every last bit of them. Arrogant, mean, and each of them acquired the personality of teething biscuit. Hannah quietly pushed aside the thought of telling him exactly just where he could stick his enormously big telescope. Thankfully contempt liked the silence and it thrived there in the dark. The silence gave Hannah something to do besides shoot off her mouth at someone who was presumably only guilty of the same thing that Hannah was evidently guilty of. Making unfounded assumptions, and acting on them accordingly.
Hearing his explanation of what exactly it was that he was doing she found herself in a predicament. She remember doing a similar paper and doing the near same thing that he was doing being out here at this hour and then having the pleasure of sitting out there for next four hours waiting for the alignment that never happened. It was a very cold annoying lesson that she regretted as she nearly caught pneumonia from it..
Hannah realized she had a choice set before her, she could keep the information to herself and let a Slytherin reap the rewards, or she could attempt to overlook some of her own prejudices.
It didn’t take that long of an inner debate for her to come to her choice, though the decision was one she didn't like. She knew this wasn’t something as easy as leading an un-willing Therstral to water; no this was going tempting the impossible. Hmmm, perhaps you can make him think it was his idea. She wasn’t exactly willing to stoop to mind games, well not yet at least. Trust comes with respect; you're not going to earn that if he thinks your screwing with him. Just try honesty Looking out over at the sky, she grimaced slightly.
“Making a chart of Lunar cycle and charting alignments of stars.. It sounds very tedious.” She looked down and bit her bottom lip. “ I can tell your very much an independent sort of fellow, and I know that most Slytherin’s would rather bait a Hippogriff with their private parts than to accept help from someone in Hufflepuff. “ She wrinkled her nose in disgust “We really are not all that bad. Granted I did spend a better part of this morning with my stupid Jumper on inside out but it was still dark when I got dressed and...._____ “ she sighed “ I think I’m doing a better job of talking you out of my help, which is not my intention.” Scolding herself she didn’t realize she was still scolding herself verbally where he could still hear. “I should have just kept that detail about the jumper thing to myself.” She hissed in exasperated frustration. “Just the stars you looking to align, they’re not going to align for well at the very least SEVERAL hours.. “ Frankly she didn’t see them aligning any time soon, She remembered how Professor Sinistra’s had a fondness for putting trick questions into homework. But getting this proud Slytherin to come to the same notion that all his hard work would be in vain would probably not endear her to him in the least. “Just your dealing with Pictoris.” She began to explain her theory and stopped figuring perhaps visual aids might be helpful.. She quickly summoned three golf balls positioning them according the notes she remembered taking “Just The brightest star in ‘The Painter’ and the eye of the ‘Cat’ are not even in the same trigonometric Parallaxes and well Octanius If I remember correctly that is the south pole star.. If that is right I don’t see how they would line up.. Just it sounds a bit like a trick question.”

Severus was well used to Sinistra's idea of a joke, but that didn't make this girl any less of an idiot. Talking about her jumper, of all things? And that wasn't half as bad as all that rubbish she began spouting about quadrangles and all that rot. "I meant," he said irritably, pronouncing his words very precisely. "I'm supposed to chart where each of them is over the course of a few days and calculate when their next alignment will be... not with each other, with any other star."
He felt like he was talking to a six-year-old. Were all Hufflepuffs this ridiculously simple? Merlin, he hoped not. Having never really conversed with any, he inwardly shuddered to think that he'd been in the same building as a herd of complete imbeciles for six years. But he had to admit, this one had "spunk", as his father would say. Not that he ever wanted to be like his father in any way, but he thought the word fitting in this context.
This girl, though... what was her name? Come to think of it, he didn't think he'd ever seen her before. Strange. Severus prided himself on being fairly observant, even if she was only a Hufflepuff. But then, it dawned on him. She was a transfer. In that moment, things got a lot more interesting, to him anyway.
So far, he'd only had the fortune of meeting one transfer, Draco Malfoy, who, he figured, hardly counted at all. But this girl, whoever she was, could very likely prove useful in his quest for information. After all, depending on how gullible she was, he could probably get her to talk about where she came from... Honestly, he was dying to know how a large group of students had been permitted to transfer from wherever on such short notice, and in the middle of the school year. Most of them were sixth years too, and that one simply baffled Severus. How could you be a sixth year if you hadn't attended the previous five? It really irritated him.
It seemed like most of the transfers knew each other as well. They had to have come from someplace, but, alas, no one was really quite as interested as Severus was on the subject. If he was going to be honest with himself, which he probably wasn't, then he was getting more obsessed about it by the day. It likely wasn't healthy for him, but he couldn't be bothered to care.
Although he'd been snide to her not a moment before, he cleared his expression of irritation, replacing it with one that was carefully neutral, which was about as pleasant as he ever got. "I'm afraid I'm not being very polite," he commented, extending a hand to her in greeting. "I don't believe we've met. I'm Severus."
Inwardly, he cringed. Barely anyone called him by his first name, but he figured, since she was a Hufflepuff, that it would be more prudent for him to "befriend" her if he wanted any information. It was all in the interest of knowledge; so, he swallowed his feelings of dread.
((ohohsee: it's lots better! You're awesome! :D))

That little fact was apparent from the moment their paths crossed. It seemed that her speaking was certainly not helping his frustration level. A look of shock and embarrassment was on her face, as the Slytherin all but wrote it in the sky that she had blatantly and stupidly misunderstood his assignment. The little balls she had used as visual aids literally dropped out of thin air as her wand lowered. Hannah was not used to humiliating herself so grievously, and it showed in her reaction. Hannah flushed a brilliant shade of scarlet that she prayed that would go un-noted, as she dropped her chin and scooted back from him. Hannah had hoped that she hadn’t given the boy the satisfaction that for a margin of a second her embarrassment had almost reduced her to tears. “ I was just trying to help you. I apparently miss-understood your assignment.. I didn't think you were Still charting which direction the stars go..”Hannah choked out between clinched teeth as she willed herself to control that weak emotion that would only see her further humiliated. Experience had taught Hannah long ago, that tears were always wasted on people like him. The humiliation she felt was short-lived. It only took a few moments for the embarrassment she felt to fuel another emotion that seemed to quickly take over. Anger at herself to have re-acted the way that she figured he had goaded for. Hannah hated being manipulated so easily and she knew that her reaction to his harsh words would only bring him satisfaction, somehow that was even more offensive than his words had been to her. Hannah who up to moments ago looked friendly, now was going beginning to show the first signs of that volatile temper. She went from smiling and kindness to vicious glare. Her change in mood was something she held firmly against him knowing that her current black mood was strictly his fault. Merlin sake I do believe that he is by far the most unpleasant person I’ve ever had the misfortune of encountering. Her eyes critically picked over him, seeking out flaws that would make him seem every bit the cold bastard she had him pegged for. Which is saying a lot considering the company in which I have kept. It was her intention just to leave him in the peace that he so desperately needed. She had stood up and turned around and was debating on just how far enough from him was Far enough; however then he spoke, she was expecting something cutting and rude. Something on the same caliber of what she had already heard from him, like maybe instead of just insinuating it. Maybe he would just come right out and call her an idiot. To be honest she would have preferred an insult to what he gave her. It would have been so much easier to write him off as some unfortunate Jerk with the tact of a lemon if he just kept hissing insults at her. Sadly he didn’t keep with his theme of scary angst, instead he had just managed to confuse her. If she wasn’t annoyed earlier this certainly annoyed her. Now she wasn’t sure if she could just write him off as a tactless jerk that got his jollies off by insulting the kindness of strangers. She honestly didn’t know what direction he was attending to take this, but she knew this, she wasn’t about to follow him willingly. She looked at the offered hand and then returned her glance to his face. It was a face that seemed oddly familiar, a look of obvious skepticism in her glance. “Don’t patronize me..” She said simply.. “ If you’re a jerk with the manners of a troll.. Least have the respect for yourself to own it.. Severus” Without skipping a beat she caught the handle of her metal pail and turning around she headed in the direction in which she came from.. “ I don’t apologize to people whom I believe are beneath me, and contrary to whatever might be circling that narrow mind of yours, I don’t really care if you have the politeness of a blast-ended Skrewt, and happen to think I’m the biggest moron that the school has ever needed to contend with.” Setting up a shot she looked out over the stars and launched a ball far into the night sky where it broke off into a display of crimson colored lights. “ I certainly don’t require an announcement for it either, I know your being impolite; However your allowed to be that way, as your entitled to your assumptions, even if they are as vague and misguided as your attempts at describing what you were doing in Astronomy..” She added with a chuckle “Regardless if you have the tact of a Neanderthal, or prone to behaving like a jerk like most men Severus. I’m willing to accept you for who you are flaws and all. Though I can tell I have annoyed you, where at times I do question my intelligence, I do know just when to leave well enough alone.

Severus grimaced, realizing he'd really stuck his foot in it this time. He wished he'd realized sooner that she was a transfer, then he probably wouldn't have given her such an attitude. Then again, had he really said that much to offend her? Merlin, she was sensitive. He hadn't even given her any real verbal attacks. Ah well, what did you expect from a Hufflepuff?
Regardless of how ridiculous all this was, she was probably his best bet at getting information about the transfers. So, how to regain her good favor? To make her forget the last five minutes ever happened? He couldn't apologize; just thinking about it gave him a sour taste in the back of his mouth. But at the same time, she had just been trying to help him, even if she'd gone about it in the completely wrong way. After listening to her diatribe, he realized that, more than likely, all he had to do was treat her with some respect. He could do that.
For now.
He let the hand she'd ignored fall as he stood up, leaning against the stone wall. Severus watched as she lit up fireworks in the night sky, the definitive smack of wood against ball loud and shocking in the silence of nighttime. "Perhaps you might take stock of the situation before you cast aspersions on my character," he commented blithely. "I've merely been having a bad day."
Severus decided not to mention that pretty much every day was a bad day, for him. Honestly, what would be the point? Obviously, this girl couldn't handle his usual foul mood; so, he would tone it down around her if it meant that she would trust him. After all, she didn't seem like a horrible sort... just a bit clumsy and scatter-brained. She wasn't exactly fantastic company, but she wasn't all that bad either, was she?
He experienced one panicked moment of what if she's a Mudblood, but quickly discounted the thought. Even if she was, he wouldn't back out now. He needed information. But aside from that, he could sort of tell she wasn't. Severus wasn't positive why or how, intuition perhaps, but he just had a feeling that she was raised around magic. Slightly mollified, he dismissed that whole line of thought.
"Look, we've gotten off to a bad start," he stated, rather unnecessarily, when he thought about it. "I'm terrible company at the moment, but I didn't mean to offend you."
Which was true, of course. He'd only meant for her to go away and leave him alone, but all of his insults and personal attacks he'd kept to himself. Wasn't that nice of him? Actually, he was glad he hadn't actually said anything nasty to her, since that would work in his favor. He only hoped that she would be less hostile towards him soon.

And guess what hun? People here genuinely suck.
True it was a dark grim thought, but it was one that been earned through the course of the day. Hannah knew that she shouldn’t be feeling once ounce of guilt, but still it was there slowly crawling up eating at her.
“Honestly what is the big deal, So I told off a snake.. Big Whomp” Hannah hissed silently at herself attempting to reassure her mind that she had been very much justified, and those feelings of guilt that were picking at her conscience were completely un-justified..
“It’s not like I took up spitting at and cursing Muggle borns. You’re still a good person… “Sadly all her personal reassurance did nothing for her conscience as he basically called her a judgmental prat.. Well if he was hoping to take her down a peg or two he had been greatly successful, as being called Judgmental always gave her cause to think, and assess her behavior.
Hannah knew that being judgmental was perhaps her biggest flaw, it was something she resented in her mother and where she could barely tolerate the flaw in other people she absolutely hated being reminded that she was also guilty of it. Keeping an open mind was proving difficult as it required trusting people and when you do that you set yourself up for being hurt.. She knew she wasn’t like her mother. Being cold and bitter was something that Hannah worked hard at to avoid. Hannah was smart enough to know being bitter and unforgiving wasn’t something that you were born with, it was something you were molded into out of need.
Looking back at the boy, she could almost hear Kingsley’s warning playing in the wind that stirred around them. Have respect for yourself; make them earn your trust. Don’t just hand it out like candy. Her eyes wide and expressing every bit of emotion she felt, a book couldn’t be found that was easier to read. Her body language teamed up with her expression to sell her out. Hannah looked as frightened as she looked ashamed.
It was a mistake to look at him directly as it seemed to compound the guilt as he looked so ordinary so average. He didn’t glitter with expensive clothes, nor was he wearing a sneer of contempt. In fact, he looked well just as she felt, frustrated and tired.
With the last bit of trust she could muster she gave herself to the idea that maybe just maybe people weren’t as horrible as she thought that perhaps their world still had a bit of humanity in it.. She drew a deep breath and did what against her better judgment, ignoring what her past had taught and all the lessons of cruelty that his kind had mercilessly given her. She opened herself to an attack that she knew she wasn’t strong enough to survive, as she knew that the worst wounds were often made without use of a wand. Those are the most painful because you inflict them to yourself.
“I’m sorry.” She spoke quietly. “ I didn’t mean to insult you. I’m sure you don’t have the manners of a troll.” She blushed at her words, and her chin dipped demurely down to hide the embarrassment that painted her cheeks red.
“ I shouldn’t have been mean, I’m afraid you haven’t caught me at my best either, It has been a horrible day for the two of us. I’m sure you wouldn’t relate, but a few bullies have seemed to completely ruin my day. I came out here in hopes to fighting off the feeling that it would ruin my night as well. I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have encroached on your space and pestered you; I simply wanted to feel useful.”

((ooc: Just a tiny note, I would recommend only using the colored text for words she actually speaks to Severus. I was slightly confused when I read some of it because I wasn't sure if Severus was supposed to have heard it or not. My post is going under the assumption that she muttered the first few sentences to herself so he couldn't hear. xD Oh, and sorry for the epic suckage of this post, by the way. :| ))
Severus couldn't help but be a little... shocked. It had been so simple, easy even, to earn her forgiveness. The sheer unexpectedness of it struck him as suspicious, but, really, it wasn't like she was plotting against him by admitting that she was wrong. Did Hufflepuffs even know how to manipulate people like that?
He was being paranoid; he could tell. His panic was an obvious overreaction, but he'd honestly never met anyone so... gullible? Innocent? Those weren't the right words at all, but he simply couldn't define it. She seemed to genuinely let everything that had passed between them go.
It made him wish, for a moment, that all relationships were that easy.
"It's nothing," he told her by way of accepting her apology. And anyway, he could "relate" to her being bullied a lot more than he'd care to. Even though he didn't particularly like her... He had to admit to feeling a pang of sympathy. It vanished quickly, as he figured the bullies in question might have had good reason to insult her. She was rather simple, wasn't she? And she had quite the tendency to babble...
Despite his feeble attempts at trying to distance himself from her, he felt a strange comaraderie with her. She was, perhaps, not nearly the sort of person he was used to, but, at the moment, her forgiving personality was refreshing, like a cool breeze on sunburned skin. All that was required to deal with her was a little patience, and, for now, Severus was willing to supply it.
"Don't let it worry you," he admonished her quietly. "Here, perhaps we should start again."
He pushed off from the wall to stand by her, offering his hand again. "Good evening, my name is Severus Snape. It's a pleasure to make your acquaintance," he said, raising an eyebrow in amusement.

Wow, that basically summed up an example of her luck right then and there.. Of all people in that castle for her to find and attempt to befriend it would be Severus Snape, Granted she was just offering friendship, but still as she took his hand and gave it a firm shake. She wondered if she had completely lost her mind.. Granted This wasn’t Voldermort himself, but honestly, Could there be a worse choice for friendship? Hannah couldn’t keep track all the times she had left that professor’s classroom in tears, feeling irrevocably damaged from his insults..
On good days she flew below his radar.. She was quick to learn that below his radar was just where she needed to remain, she preferred being an invisible Hufflepuff. That was so much better than being an idiot who was dishonoring the standards to the school.. Hannah only remember sparking his anger once, and that was the time she attempted to help Neville stop his cauldron from melting.. She had interceded against a stern order, and it was trespass she had paid dearly for. It was obvious compassion wasn’t an attribute that Professor Snape acknowledged well not to her at least.. In fact if she were to list all the virtues that he would find important. It was a strong possibility that she wouldn’t possess even one.
But that was then, This is now.. Was she expecting to ride off into the sunset on the back of his broom, or mother a brood of his offspring? HARDLY she simply wanted to write a better page of her in his life, that is it.

Was the Past few days as bad as she had thought? Well coming from the fact that her life basically sucked to begin with, she had been relieved to find that the life outside the safe confines of the Hufflepuff common room, hadn’t much changed. There was just more staring and whispering and the occasional insult that came from the same people who normally did that sort of thing.
Strange that it was her own house, that was perhaps the most unbearable place for her in the castle.. Yes the concerned extended family was quick to close ranks around Hannah whom the thought was mortally wounded. There was simply no escaping it, She would wake up in the morning to five pairs of sleepy eyes fixed on her in a look of concern..
“Hannah you okay? You were talking in your sleep again…
Hannah of course in the beginning didn’t realize she was egging them on with her replies..” Did I at least say anything good, or was it the same dream about drowning Evan’s in the lake?” She was at least thankful that her animosity towards Evan’s was slowly but surely dying down a bit, as nothing was worse than having hatred for someone.. Hannah wasn’t a bitter person and she prided herself on her ability to moving on. She was born to radiate compassion and good, and Hannah knew that she couldn’t do that while seething with disgust and anger. There was no victory to be had if she stayed back and licked her wounds.. Yes Lily Evan’s behaved like a ragging bitch that night, and had completely humiliated Severus and Her, but that was the thing.. It was done, there was no going back and changing that event. There was nothing left she could do, but choose how she would re-act to it.
It was those from her own house that seemed to give her most practice in re-acting. They were curious, and as it seemed a bit desperate for some sort of drama.. Leave it to Hannah’s humiliation to be the first good bit of gossip for the house of Hufflepuff, since the beginning of term. Hannah took it in stride, she after all remembered being like that once.. Truthfully she would have given anything to be in their shoe’s to pester someone else on the sorted details of their personal life.
Even their house ghost seemed to think he had cause for concern, and every time their paths crossed he would ask if an apology had been made. Hannah would attempt to explain that boy in question was a Slytherin, and apologies were more than likely not in his abilities.
Lowered expectations were a lovely thing… Once you thought the worst of people, they rarely ever let you down. She didn’t need a why after all.. And that soon became her way of handling things.. “ People didn’t need a reason to act deplorably.. They just need an opportunity.” Granted it wasn’t at all what people wanted to hear, but it put a stop to the questions.. Granted it might have alienated her from her house a bit more, but it was a price she was willing to pay for peace, and a touchy subject dropped.
She was going out to her place of refuge and for the first time she wasn't in the least bit worried about what she found out there. This time she wasn’t armed with anything illegal, as Filch had confiscated the few things she had days prior. Now she was harmless as a kitten as she ventured up the winding stairs to the astronomy tower armed with a large assortment of books, and a very old telescope that she had borrowed and a blanket to sit upon, and some handmade peppermint tea bags to get her through the night while she searched and tracked that comets trajectory.
She quickly set up, stretching tatty calico quilt across the stone floor in her section of the tower she pulled from her bag a tarnished brass colored tea kettle that was still steaming with heat, digging around in her bag she found a tea-cup which she filled with steaming water, and plopped a with a tea bag that quickly tinted the air with a smell of peppermint. Balancing the tea-cup upon her knee she set up the telescope swiftly with a book propped open on large pile of other books sitting next to the telescope.

The Ball had been... more than a disaster. For days, he had carried around with him the weight of everyone's eyes. The Gryffindors closed ranks around Lily, protecting her from the big bad Slytherin. All the Hufflepuffs, every single one, would throw their noses straight in the air and turn away whenever he came near, shutting him out completely. The Ravenclaws were fairly neutral, but they still stared incessantly.
And the Slytherins... They began harping on him incessantly about asking a Hufflepuff to the ball, saying things like "I guess she was the only one who would put out for him. Not exactly good-looking, is he?" or "Never thought you were into dumb blondes, Snape". Of course, these were Slytherins. They never said it to his face, but it was always there in their eyes, their disapproval, their disdain. And they always made sure to drop hints, whispers behind his back that they knew he could hear. His housemates did not appreciate having their formidable reputation tarnished by Hufflepuff interference.
Not that he really cared about anybody's opinion, but Severus hated any deviation from the norm. Honestly, weren't Hufflepuffs supposed to be doltish, friendly types? They most certainly weren't now. It seemed that the whole school was against him. Though he was probably just being paranoid, he could have sworn that even the teachers liked him less. Assigning extra work for him was definitely not a sign of good will!
Then again, that's probably what happened when you scored Dreadful on several previous homework assignments. Astronomy was not exactly his forte to begin with, but the events following the Ball had left him even more off-kilter. He noticed his grades suffering, but what could he do? Going to the library was an exercise in dodging glares and ignoring when people "accidentally" bumped into him. Most of the students weren't even remotely involved in the drama that had gone on, but, then again, most of the students were simply waiting for an excuse to be nasty to him. This most certainly counted as a good excuse. Severus wasn't exactly known for his likability and sunny disposition, after all.
So, it was with a heavy heart that Severus trudged up the stairs to the Astronomy Tower. The was massively behind on his assignments, and he didn't particularly want to do them, but his sense of honor and his love of learning forced him to just go do his work anyway. What else did he have to do? Talk with friends? Right.
He pushed open the door that lead onto the terrace, and as he stared out at the battlements he spotted a vaguely familiar head of golden hair. Hannah, he realized grimly. Not really wanting to find out how angry she was at him, he decided not to say anything to her. Reluctantly, he walked across the space and began to set himself up a few feet away from her. Laying out the papers he needed to mark, he gingerly extracted his telescope from his bag. It was broken, thanks to some Gryffindor who had decided to step on his bag, and he couldn't afford a new one. Thankfully, he could still use it somewhat, but the stand was mangled and the zoom focus didn't quite work.
A small sigh escaped him, and he purposefully didn't look over at the other girl. What would he say? I'm sorry that I couldn't handle the pressure; sorry that I left you because I didn't want you to see me cry? He could never say any of those things. Perhaps he shouldn't have left her alone, but other than that, he hadn't done anything to her.
Though, really, he now realized that he had provoked Lily. He wondered if Hannah blamed Lily, and he didn't like the thought. Honestly, it had been a huge misunderstanding from start to finish. He hadn't gone to the Ball with Hannah as the beginning of a serious relationship. They were going to play Wizard's Chess, for Merlin's sake. And he'd only wanted information about where she'd come from. It wasn't as if he'd actually liked her like that. But Lily had seen it that way, and after what happened in the Room of Requirement, she had taken it as a rejection of their... friendship. Or whatever it was. He quite honestly didn't know anymore.
Hannah had gotten caught in the crossfire, but it wasn't anyone's fault. Lily had been horribly hurt, and Severus had been unable to see that, he had refused to see it. If he could go back... he probably wouldn't have brought someone to the Ball. At least not officially.
His thoughts were dark and sad as he looked up to the sky. The stars seemed so completely unimportant to him, then, after everything that had been going on. He just wanted to go to sleep and wake up later, much later, when life was better. He didn't want to go through all this pain in order to reach peace.

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=style, background-image:url(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v202/redheadsaid/growningfears.png); width: 457px; padding-top: 30; padding-bottom: 30; -moz-border-radius: 35 35 35 35; -webkit-border-radius: 35 35 35 35;]hi Daily dose of Destiny
Sitting up on her knee’s she did several things, watching her work on something she was passionate about was like watching a tornado un-fold from the funnel. There was beautiful grace mixed with horrifying chaos. In this case, there was her quickly adjusting the zoom sadly she forgot the teacup that was balanced on her knee till she had to catch it, which she shocked herself by catching it before anything shattered or stained with peppermint tea..
Her eyes stayed focused on the minuscule script of that book, that seemed only written to annoy her eyes. She was truly proving her nerd like tendencies as she wasn’t there for last resort to manage some work that had been left to pile up… She was completely in the clear when it came to homework. She was actually out with a telescope for personal entertainment. Oh yes she was completely securing herself a spot in the Dorks hall of fame with her little research project, but it wasn’t as if she had more pressing social obligations.
Granted she could be out there on the pitch as James Potter didn’t seem to do more than just remind her of curfew times, well that, and she knew she couldn’t afford to lose another bet with him granted last time he didn’t ask her for anything of personal value, but that didn’t mean he wouldn’t if their paths crossed again. Yep that right there was reason to stay far away from the pitch.
However the moment those rusty hinges let out a shrill squeal she found herself rethinking the whole pitch thing, as the last thing she knew she needed right now was a encounter with Severus Snape, frankly she was more prepared to deal with a Dragon than having to deal with him. It seemed fate had another plan set aside, as it was no other than Severus Snape that entered the astronomy tower.
Hannah knew the worst thing she could possibly do is look at him as she knew herself enough to know she would only reflect what she was feeling and thinking, which was simply Please say something… Hell even a sod off is better than being invisible., sadly even still she couldn’t help it, she was very much a person enslaved to her emotions and she perhaps gave him the very thing that would feed his ego, the knowledge that he had an effect on her as she did the very thing she fought against her eyes followed him and even more humiliating was the tragic small smile that rested on her lips.
Her reward was of course the determined turning away of his face to make it very well known that she was invisible and non-existent to him. Its effect was like breathing life into her personal nightmare, It made her well aware where she fit in with him the fact that she didn’t even warrant the title of acquaintance. Severus had just managed to reduced her to feeling what she felt like in his classroom for all those years, a tear in the ocean.. truly insignificant.
The small smile washed from her face as she came to the realization that for whatever reason he deemed her irrelevant and a waste of time in-spite of the fact that she had done nothing to him other than try to be his friend and try to defend him to someone whom she thought was being rude…
Don’t stare.. God Hannah Don’t do that to yourself.. She told herself in an effort to stop what was happening. LOOK AWAY! Don’t give him the benefit of seeing you hurt it would only feed his ego.. So it was with the last shred of respect that her chin dipped down and her glance quickly adverted as her eyes grew wet with the suggestion of tears. The tears at least could be controlled the action even if the shame she felt was something she had no control over.
Her eyes desperate were for a distraction. Hannah eyes returned to her books and adjusting the zoom, knowing she needed to calm herself she took a gulp of tea, and closed her eyes. Past experienced taught her that he more than likely wasn’t going to be a problem that could be dealt with by simple ignoring him, as regardless of what he felt about her she would acknowledge his existence. He was a younger version of a professor, granted it was the younger version of a professor whom she doubted knew her first name, Hannah Abbott had enough respect for her old professor to at least garner that.
She knew she should say something, but knew that she at this point would probably only be humiliated in doing so.. But she wasn’t going to ignore him she needed to prove to herself that she was at least strong enough to deal with it, and with him.. She after all was her mother’s child and her purebloods nobility, even if her blood was only a fraction of what her mother's blood was. Hannah still had a presence of mind face adversity with some shred of dignity and grace..
It slowly dawned on her what to do.. Yes it granted and would probably not be rewarded positively, but at this point negative attention was better than no attention. So went about handling this problem in the same fashion she handled little awkward spats with Susan and Ernie.
She pulled from her pile of books a scrap of parchment, and her turkey feather quill dipping the quill tip her ink pot full of shimmering moss-green ink. She closed her eyes and tried to think of something witty and humorous to say but sadly nothing came all that came to mind was the simple..
Missed a fine game there Severus. Not sure if you found fun that evening, but know you were missed .. Justin swore 5 galleon’s that you couldn’t beat him.. Mind you he is second year and quite brilliant in his own mind, but It would have been epic to watch him pee himself if you had been there to take the challenge…Oh speaking of Egocentric silliness.. I’m still sticking by my initial theory that I too, like Justin would have waxed your tail with my superior strategic abilities if you had come.. Soooo by guilt of forfeit you must now and forever more bow down to the Queen of Wizard’s chess as I’m currently undefeated.. Ohhhh and merlin help you if you ignore me in the halls like your ignoring me now.. I swear I’ll make a spectacle.. I will do something un-holy like compliment you on the firmness of you bum or something equally dreadful in front of every Slytherin we come in contact with.. It’s not like their opinion of me could reach a whole new level of low so I have nothing to loose... I am of course kidding about that last bit, but in all seriousness I don’t think Hello, how are you is all that out of the ordinary for Acquaintances.
Without looking over it for grammar error’s or anything that should be omitted out of prudence and respect for herself she simply put began folding it to the classic origami frog and with a swish of her wand it came to paper doll life as the parchment frog began to hope around its paper chest expanded out in classic frog’ish way she smiled softly as it felt like home it felt normal for her she was simply sending a note to open dialog. .Picking up her quill she quickly jotted down on its tongue that it randomly spat out.. READ ME.. Or I shall Croak.. 1,258, wearing, Tag Larry, Hope this one is better than the others ;) |
