[/div] nothing but clouds, Jo twirled a lock of blond hair around her ink-stained fingers, her wand stuck haphazardly between her toes, her quill hanging out of her mouth. The scars on her left calf from a jellyfish sting she’d gotten years before was displayed for all to see- she’d ditched her socks and shoes for bare feet. The tattered, faded friendship bracelets around her wrist and ankle flapped slightly in the cool afternoon sun, her charm bracelet tinkling musically. Her bag swayed slightly in the wind, swinging back and forth on the branch she’d hung it on. Jo stretched out over her branch of choice, propping her cheek on one hand and twirling hair. The other hand rubbed on her newest sketch, smearing a particularly dark line into something vaguely resembling a shadow. Jo made a face, disliking the darkness of the picture.
Her socks and shoes hung from her bag, the laces tied together and thrown over the shoulder strap. Her Hogwarts sweater was underneath her elbows, extra padding against the rough bark. She’d rolled up her sleeves to the elbows- though she couldn’t escape smudging them with charcoal, as usual, and her forearms looked positively black. The bronze-and-blue Ravenclaw tie, one of the most hated pieces of Jo’s uniform, was currently in use as a headband, accompanied by a large, cheery sunflower. Jo loved sunflowers.
As she sketched, Jo hummed, one of the songs Ryan had played for her on his guitar. Ryan… He was cute enough, as boys went, and he had a half-rugged, half-shy appeal to him that she hadn’t seen before. He was good company, and a decent kisser. But Jo couldn’t help her wandering eye. She’d worked her way through most of the sixth-year boys already, so Ryan didn’t need to fear them, but she couldn’t resist ogling some of the other transfers. Some of them were asking to have their hair set on fire- some of them seemed nice enough, and a few were on her “to-do” list for sure.
Jo wrinkled her nose at her drawing- a sketch of the lake, complete with one of the giant squid’s tentacles. Normally, Jo disliked squid. Her father, though normally a fair cook, had tried to make calamari for dinner, and the results had been smelly, messy, and disastrous. They’d had ice cream instead. But Jo liked the giant squid- mostly because it was friendly, and it wasn’t being served for dinner. A few students sat by the shore as she drew, watching the same squid paddle through the dark water. Jo was halfway tempted to join it- she hadn’t been swimming in months, and she missed it. The closest she’d come to being submerged was taking a bath- though the Prefect’s Bathroom was supposed to be just as good as a pool. Jo hadn’t broken into the place yet- maybe it was time to test it out. She wondered vaguely if the Room of Requirement would give her a pool if she asked nicely. Grinning, Jo flipped the page, turning to a blank piece of parchment. It was time for new subject matter. The only remaining problem- who or what to draw? She ruled out the castle- too complex. She ruled out the first-years chasing one another across the grounds, and the lazy seventh years by the lake. Trees were boring and overdone. Sighing, Jo plucked her wand from between her toes and waved it, conjuring bright blue sparks and waving the rowan wand around like one of the sparklers she could buy at the Brighton Pier. Bored, she flipped over onto her back, one leg dangling down, the other propped up against the tree trunk.
Jo had thought, when she’d first gotten her letter, that there would never be days like this. She’d imagined adventure, excitement around every corner, never a dull moment. Magic, after all, was supposed to be exciting and wild and unpredictable. But Hogwarts dulled it down considerably- there were rules about magic. Jo hadn’t liked that one bit. She was like her favorite place, the sea. She was untamable, unbound by rules and regulations. But Hogwarts… Hogwarts was too fond of rules. Jo wished, as she had many times before, that magic had come to her in a different way. She didn’t just want to control magic- she wanted to use it, to use awesome displays of power on a daily basis. She wanted a fight to the death, or a quest like the ones she so loved to read about. But there was little to be found in the magical world. No journeys, no quests. Just ordinary life. It wasn’t all that much better than being a Muggle. What was the point, after all, of having magic, if you couldn’t use it to do things?

Exiting the castle in a hurried manner, Sebastian quickly loosened his tie before drawing his wand and giving his attire a tap. As if by magic, they turned into everyday Muggle clothing. Looking down at them, he gave a light chuckle before heading off towards the lake. Around his third year, he had enchanted his clothes to take shape of the weather outside of the castle and they hadn't failed him yet. Today, they took the form of khaki shorts, a yellow cut off t-shirt, and sandals. As he crossed the bridge to head down to the lake, he took out a set of playing cards and began to shuffle them.
Soon growing bored with the playing cards, he took to twirling his wand. It gave off sparks as he did so but he ignored it, soon catching glimpse of something up in a tree. He easily recognized a leg and he also believed he could make out a bag of some sort. Sebastian made his way towards the leg, digging through his pocket as he did so. He had many items in there; sweets, scraps of parchment, broken quills, a mouse, and fireworks among other things.
Among the fireworks, hefound that hehad two firecrackers left and decided he'd use one toscare this barefoot stranger. He finally made it up to the trunk oft he tree and looked up, glimpsing long blonde hair. He realized the stranger was a female and he hesitated for a moment. He weighed the options, would he be able to settle her if she grew angry at him? Another option he considered was whether she would fall out ofthe tree if he succeeded in scaring her.
The girl began to hum a tune, and he listened contently. It was an unfamiliar tune, but non-the-less lovely and he paused from his task to listen to her. She seemed to be thinking and he watched as she flipped onto her back, still seeming not to notice the youth beneath her. He smiled deviously, flipping his wand one last time before touching it to the fuse of the firecracker. He waited a few brief seconds before throwing it up in the air and listened to it give off a loud CRACK!

[/div] nothing but clouds, Jo sucked absentmindedly on the sugar quill in her mouth, watching blue sparks dance across her field of vision. She wondered vaguely if it wasn’t time to try sketching clouds again, however difficult it might have been to capture the lighter edges. Jo gazed up at the sky through the branches above her. One of the clouds looked a little like a conch shell. And another looked like a hippogriff- there was one that resembled a butterfly…
CRACK!
Jo yelped, her foot and left arm slipping off of the branch. Her sketchbook and pencils tumbled to the ground, landing on the soft green grass lightly. Sparks flew around her, a vibrant rainbow of green and blue and purple and orange. Jo sat bolt upright, her blond hair whipping around her face as she turned sharply. A boy stood below her tree, a Puffle. He had curly black hair and electric blue eyes, which stood out sharply in his pale face. He wore a yellow t-shirt and khaki shorts, his feet clad in sandals. He was dressed for comfort, not for style- but there was a certain style to him nonetheless. Something about the way he stood, with his shoulders relaxed and his stance casually slouchy. There was a mischievous light in his face, a sort of good-natured crookedness. He looked younger than her, though only by a little- Jo pegged him as a fifth-year. Not a transfer- she vaguely remembered seeing him somewhere before. Jo put her hands on her branch and hopped down, blue sparks flying out of her wand. It was receptive to her moods that way- all she had to do was feel, and it would give off sparks or smoke or the smell of the sea.
Jo’s feet touched the earth, soft green grass worming its way between her toes. Her friendship bracelets and anklets, coupled with her tie-headband, sunflower accessory, orange-streaked-hair, and bright purple toenail polish probably made her look more eccentric than she was. Propping a dusty charcoal-covered hand on her hip, Jo looked the boy up and down. She raised an eyebrow, daring him to say something smart-alecky.
”You called?” she asked dryly. She pulled her hair back from her neck with her other hand, not taking her eyes off of the Hufflepuff. ”Don’t you know better than to mess with older women?” she said, and flicked her wand in his direction carelessly. Jo liked the kid despite the fireworks- which was why he wasn’t running screaming from her, tousled black locks blazing. Instead, she singed the back of his neck and the one lock in front, a tiny flame lighting up the curl. Jo picked her sketchbook up from the ground, flipping through the pages carefully. However much she was reusing subject matter, her drawings were special to her- if anything had happened to them, the boy would not get away with a few smoking hairs.
A tiny smudge on the bottom of one page marked where the book had fallen. Jo frowned. Ordinarily she would have been… displeased, to put it lightly. But oddly enough, the smudge looked… good. Like it was part of the drawing. It made the shadows seem more real.
Jo looked up at the boy again, casting a less critical eye over him. He was well enough in looks- was that a pipe wrench sticking out of his back pocket? So he was odd, and possibly rather rude- but he’d captured her interest. ”Well? Are you going to tell me who the heck you are, or do I have to burn some more hair?” she asked, holding her wand up threateningly. ”I have to say, shooting a firework at me was probably not the smoothest pick-up line I’ve ever gotten. Although,” she commented thoughtfully, tapping a finger against her lips and staining them with black dust, ”I give you points for originality.”

Without reacting to the growing flame in his hair or the pain on his neck, he ran his hand through his hair. The flame was extinguished and he stopped the twirling of his hand. He pocketed it, placing it next to the pipe wrench. He gave a small smile at the girls words and began to rack his brain for a magic trick.
"I apologize, miss, I was raised without a proper father who would teach me how to properly treat a lady of your stature." Sebastian spoke, his smile growing with each word.
The girl bent down to pick up a fallen sketchpad and other supplies. Sebastian averted his eyes, trying his best not to check her out but in the end failed. When she straightened up, he watched her wand cautiously as he closed his hand and presented it to her. Without looking at her, he squeezed his hand tight and slowly opened his fingers to reveal sunflower. He had first noticed the tie around her head, used as a makeshift bandana, and the beautiful sunflower in her hair.
He offered it to her with a smile, doing his best not to seem like he was hitting on her. He explained to her that this was a token of apology and he would be honored if she accepted it. The sunflower would look beautiful in her hair, he thought to himself, it seemed to be proper. He dug in his pocket, attempting to find the remaining firework. He cursed under his breath, removing his wand from his backpocket and dropping the pipe wrench.
Swearing loudly, he stooped down to pick it and put it in it's permanant spot while scolding by telling it that it was a very bad wrench and shouldn't embarass him in such of a pretty girl. He pretended like he hadn't complimented her, sticking his wand in his front pocket and breath Accio Firecracker. The firecracker rocketed out of his pocket and he caught with little trouble.
"Where are my manners? I am Sebastian, you can call me Seb for short," He began, extending the hand with the firework in it. "If it makes you feel better, you can throw this at me."

[/div] nothing but clouds, She gave the boy points for not screaming at his flaming hair. Instead, he ran a casual hand through it, sending curls flying every which way. The boy jammed his wand into his pocket, right next to the wrench. Jo wondered why he carried the wrench around with him- was he a mechanic or something? The boy smiled a little at her, the expression rather crooked, and spoke. ”I apologize, miss, I was raised without a proper father who would teach me how to properly treat a lady of your stature.”
He beamed at her. Jo wasn’t sure whether to take him seriously or not- the archaic speech was lilting and formal. It was like the kid had stepped out of a bad medieval movie. At the same time, however, it was almost cute. She cocked her head, unable to resist a grin. ”N’worries. I was raised without a mum to teach me how to properly jinx a man of your stature. Guess that makes us even.”
She felt his eyes on her as she bent to pick up her sketchbook. Jo couldn’t suppress a certain satisfaction at that. She knew she was pretty- her blond hair and tan skin attracted more than her fair share of second glances. This was a roundabout way of punishment for the boy- and more than a little fun for her. She straightened, and noticed the boy holding his hand shut. Without uttering an incantation, without tapping his fist with his wand, he unfurled his fingers slowly to reveal a small sunflower.
Jo smiled. All right, the boy’s got style, she thought. She listened to him explain how the flower was meant as an apology- how he’d be honored if she took it. Jo nodded once, then accepted the tiny blossom. It was a lighter shade of yellow than the one perched in her hair, closer to white than gold. Only about four inches wide, the flower was downright adorable. She put it behind her ear, sliding the other one out and wrapping the long stem around her wrist. ”How did you do that?” she asked, smiling at him as she wedged her wand into the waistband of her skirt. ”You didn’t use your wand or anything!”
The boy fished in his pocket, dropping his wand in the process. Jo grinned at him. The pipe wrench fell out of his pocket, and he swore as it landed. She wondered if it might have fallen on his toes. The boy proceeded to pick it up, and- odd as it was- talk to the wrench. Something about embarrassing him in front of a pretty girl. Jo raised one eyebrow. It wasn’t that she didn’t appreciate the compliment- in fact, she was very excited about it- but it was odd for him to have spoken to the wrench, like it was a living thing. The boy put his wand into his front pocket, and another small firework zoomed out and into his hand.
”Where are my manners? I am Sebastian, you can call me Seb for short. If it makes you feel better, you can throw this at me.”
She smiled. ”It’s not fun if you know it’s coming,” she said, though she accepted the firework. ”I’ll save it for when you’re not looking. Jo Milner, by the way.” Jo shook his hand, sending him her best pretty-girl-interested-in-you smile. Ryan would go ballistic if he found out- but the extent of her plans with Sebastian the Odd Hufflepuff was some flirting, maybe a kiss or two- then sweet revenge. It had been too long since Jo had gotten a chance to properly prank someone. Hufflepuffs were easy targets- Hufflepuff boys even more so. This Sebastian would be an easy mark. Jo turned and put her sketchbook back in her bag, then hoisted herself back into the tree. She waited for a moment- just long enough for Seb to start feeling a mite disappointed- then called down to him. ”Well? Are you coming up, or what?”

Her reaction towards the sun flower was just as Sebastian had perceived and he chuckled lightly. He had no intention of explaining the trick to her, a good magician never revealed his tricks afterall. Sometimes, he wasn't even sure how he did some of his tricks. He figured it was a combination of his wizarding abilities and muggle magic that he had learned at a younger age. He remembered his first trick, it was a cardtrick for a type of talent show at his Muggle school.
A good magician never reveals his tricks," He spoke to her, reaching into his pocket for a deck of cards that he began to shuffle.
He remembered his first magic trick, it was a simple card trick where the other person chose a card at random from his deck. The cards were flipped so that Sebastian couldn't see them, the card selector would memorize his or her card and place it back in the deck. Sebastian would then shuffle the deck and pull out random cards, asking they were it. He'd ask a total of three times, each time being told wrong and he would reply with "No, but this is.", gag a little, and produce a card folded into fourths from his mouth. He would unfold the card and present it to the person, who would be astonished and acknowledge that it was their card.
Sebastian had learned this trick in his second year at Hogwarts, when he befriend Romulus. Sebastian's face became glum at the memory of Romulus. It hadn't been to long ago, this year actually, that Romulus had left Hogwarts to attend to his own affairs. Romulus had a falling out with another friend of theirs and the two had a large duel. Romulus had cast an Unforgivable Curse at their mutual pal and had been forced to flee Hogwarts with Aurors on his tail. Sebastian sometimes received letters from Romulus.
He turned his attention back to Jo, who had continued talking through his brief mental absence. After speaking to his wrench and putting it away, he had noticed that the girl raised an eyebrow at him. It was a look he was accustomed to, he had a habit of talking to inanimate objects. However, in his fourth year, he had aquired the pipe wrench from a visit to a local mechanic. His wrench was his friend, unjudging and fair.
The girl introduced herself as Jo Milner and he racked his brain for any memories involving her. Judging from her uniform, she either stole or she was a legitmate Ravenclaw. He liked Ravenclaws, they were intelligent and good conversation, though they didn't like pranks much. He noticed he was still shuffling the cards and put them back in his pocket, offering Jo a nervous smile at his habit. He had a tendancy to do things without noticing, fiddling with objects while deep in thought.
He watched Jo as she climbed back up in the tree and a disapppointed grimace came across his face, he had anticpated a little more time with the pretty Ravenclaw girl. He did a half turn to leave but her words to join her met his ears and he smiled, grabbing a hold of a limb and hauling himself up in front of her. He was closer than he had realized and he flushed a shade of scarlett for a moment before recovering his cool, backing away from her and propped his head against the trunk. He looked at her bag and caught a glimpse of her sketch book and curioisty grasped him. Running a hand through his hair, he began to speak.
"That's a sketchbook, right?" He began, doing his best not to sound like an idiot. "Have you drawn anything interesting?"

[/div] nothing but clouds, The boy reached into his pocket yet again, this time pulling out a pack of cards. ”A good magician never reveals his tricks,” he said, beginning to manipulate the deck. Jo watched his hands, fascinated by his control. She’d seen Muggle magicians do the same thing before- and she’d watched with increasing frustration as she couldn’t figure out how they did it. Jo had no patience for that sort of magic, though she had great respect for those who did. Jo smiled, her nose wrinkling. ”So you’re a magician- not just a wizard. That’s incredible!”
Jo remembered her father’s magic phase. She’d been ten years old, and Julius had splurged on magic tricks. Cheap black wands, paper doves, loaded dice and spiked decks. Jo had stopped him at the sawing-someone-in-half trick. She trusted her father- but not that much. But they’d laughed over his attempts nonetheless. Julius was a good sport. He wasn’t all that good at Muggle magic, but he was a good sport. His true gift lay with plants- flowers and trees and bushes and herbs. Every Saturday he sent fresh sunflowers for Jo via owl, sometimes large, neon-colored ones, sometimes ones as small as her thumbnail and the color of butter. Jo loved sunflowers.
Sebastian put the cards back, shooting Jo an uneasy smile. Hers was much more certain- she beamed at him. ”You’re awfully good with that deck,” she commented, gesturing at his pocket. ”I guess you’ve been doing that a while- it’s fascinating to watch.”
She couldn’t resist a laugh as Sebastian halfway turned around, his shoulders slumped with disappointment. She had him exactly where she wanted him- in the palm of her hand. He jumped up, settling a scant foot away from her. When he noticed how close he was to Jo, he reddened and backed away, embarrassed. Jo laughed, beaming at the boy. However odd he might have been, Sebastian was amusing. He tried to act cool, leaning back against the trunk and running a hand through his black hair, sending curls every which way. The tousled look works for him- he’s not bad looking. Maybe I’ll even set him up with a decent girl once I’ve had my fun, she thought pensively. She liked the Hufflepuff boy, liked the magic tricks and the modesty and even the archaic language- though, to be fair, he didn’t seem to be using it much anymore. Sebastian glanced over at her bag, then nodded at it. ”That’s a sketchbook, right? Have you drawn anything interesting?”
Jo leaned over and plucked the sketchbook from her bag again, opening it. There was a decent sketch of Kingsley in there, and a convincing one of the statue of Rowena Ravenclaw. She had several sketches of wands- hers and others’, and a few doodles of sunflowers and owls scattered here and there, next to games of tic-tac-toe and hangman. She had caricatures of her least favorite teachers, and melancholy charcoal drawings of the grounds at night. There was a picture of Gus, Ryan’s cat, and one of Ryan himself- she didn’t open to that page. What Sebastian didn’t know wouldn’t hurt him. ”Depends what you call interesting,” she said, smiling. Jo flipped to a safe page, opening to a large illustration of the Brighton Pier. It had taken her four weeks to get it just right- she’d done the sketch in pencil instead of her usual charcoal. ”Take a look- it’s where I spend all my time at home. You ever been to the beach? Brighton Pier is fantastic.” She plonked the sketchbook down, gesturing for him to look, then leaned back, folding her hands behind her head as she settled back on the branch, one foot still dangling down, the other propped on her knee. Jo pulled her wand out of her waistband again, flicking it lazily and conjuring several small orbs of water. She poked them with the tip of her wand, grinning as they changed colors, bobbling around her branch playfully.

Jo placed the sketchpad in front of him and he slowly picked it up, bringing it closer to him to exam it. It seemed familiar and he tried his hardest to remember where he'd seen it. He didn't go on many vacations and Brighton Pier wasn't near anywhere he lived. The name Romulus came to mind and he dug in his pocket again, this time producing a folded photograph. In his last letter, Romulus had sent this photo and asked him for an opinion.
Unfolding it and setting it next to the sketch, they were similar and he narrowed his eyes in suspicion. He looked up at Jo, offering her a small smile in case she'd seen his narrowed eyes. He set the sketch pad down, turning towards her and placing the photograph right next to it. He studied it upside, trying to notice any flaw between the two. They were near matches, some significant differences but otherwise the same.
"My friend sent me this in his last letter." He explained to Jo slowly, attempting to put his thoughts together so that they would make sense. "His name is Romulus, Romulus Parry. He was in your year, id you know him?"
He looked up to make eye contact with her, his blue meeting blue and green. For the first time, he noticed her eyes were different colours and he was amazed. They were equally as pretty and only added to his attraction to her. He noticed she was prodding small orbs of water, changing the colour with each poke. He dug in his pocket, producing three scraps of parchment and hastily folded them into the shape of swans.
He muttered an incantation under his breath and the paper swans came to life, taking flight and gliding around Sebastian and Jo. He followed them with his eyes, thinking of Romulus. This was another trick he had taught her, but Romulus had used them to annoy a Professor. The three of them, Romulus, Sebastian, and there other friend had all received detention because they were laughing the loudest and she couldn't tell whom had produced the annoying paper fowl. Sebastian smiled at the memory but it soon faded when he remember he was alone.
His wrench gave him a pain in the arse and he removed it from his pocket, muttering it to and hanging it from a branch above them. Wiping a bit of sweat from his forward, he couldn't help but feel like swimming. He eyed the lake, formulating a plan as he did so. With a wave of his wand, the swans ceased their flight and landed on Jo's sketch pad. He grabbed his wrench from up above and hopped down from the tree.
"Want to go for a swim?" He asked her, a mischievous smile taking over his face as he turned to face Hogwarts.

[/div] nothing but clouds, Sebastian picked up her sketchbook, inspecting the drawing she’d opened to. Once again, the Hufflepuff boy fished through his pocket, pulling out a piece of paper and narrowing his eyes slightly. Is it that bad? she wondered, nervous. Jo loved to draw- her only weakness was her hatred of criticism. I thought it was rather good, myself, she thought glumly. Then she noticed the paper in his hand. Jo tilted her head slightly, trying not to appear nosy while still wondering what it was. Sebastian unfolded it, revealing a photograph. He looked up, smiling at Jo. Maybe not so bad after all? she mused. Sebastian put the pad down, placing the photo next to it and scrutinizing both. Jo leaned forward, curious.
It was a Wizarding picture, one of Brighton Pier. It made her feel slightly homesick for the sea, for her apartment and the beach and the Pier itself. There were a few changes between her drawing and the photo- the people in it were more covered up against the brisk November air, and there were fewer ice-cream vendors, but apart from that, it was the same. She blinked. Having drawn the picture from memory, she was surprised she’d gotten so much right- even down to the chips of paint missing from one of the boards.
”My friend sent me this in his last letter. His name is Romulus, Romulus Parry. He was in your year, did you know him?”
Jo tilted her hand, shrugging. ”Meh. He was in Slytherin- we didn’t talk much. But I knew his face, and his name.” She was lying. She’d known Romulus Parry. Not well- few people could have said that- but she remembered him vividly. At the beginning of their fourth year, he’d taken her wrist and… sniffed it, making her seriously consider setting his hair on fire. It had been more than a little freaky- but his reputation as a fast and cruel duelist made her reconsider. Besides, for all his oddities, Romulus Parry was cute. He’d released her arm, smiling a little as he said two words, and two words only. Half-blood.
Jo still thought about it sometimes. He’d left very suddenly in the middle of her fifth year. She’d never known why, but suspected it had something to do with the scandal involving a teacher. The details had been covered up well. Jo regretted not knowing why he’d gone. Romulus Parry had always had an air about him, a distinct mysterious presence to him. It was invigorating- Jo had not been the only girl at Hogwarts who had been enraptured by Romulus’s good looks and charm. He’d kept mainly to himself, as she remembered it, his group of friends small but devoted. She vaguely remembered a boy with curly black hair among them, one with electric blue eyes. ”You were good friends, weren’t you? I remember seeing you with him.”
She blinked, leaving her reverie quickly. Sebastian was looking at her, directly into her eyes. The different colors got different reactions. Some thought it was odd- some thought it was beautiful. Some thought both. Sebastian seemed to belong to the second school of thought, and she smiled. In the palm of my hand, she thought happily. Her left eye was a bright shade of slate blue- sometimes more gray, sometimes more blue depending on her mood and the light. Her right eye was a light green. She liked the effect, liked being able to make people do double takes.
Sebastian dug three pieces of parchment from his pockets, folding them into small origami swans. She smiled as he waved his wand, causing the three to fly around the branch, circling her watery orbs and soaring through the leaves. Jo laughed with delight. ”That’s fantastic! Oh, that’s absolutely marvelous.”
Sebastian took the wrench out of his pocket again, hanging it on a branch above them and to her left. His gaze drifted over to the lake, and he waved his wand. The swans settled on her sketchbook, origami figures again. He took the wrench back down and hopped to the ground, grinning wickedly. ”Want to go for a swim?”
Jo laughed again, thoroughly enjoying herself. ”Always,” she replied, hopping down as well. She folded up the sketchbook, keeping the swans tucked inside, and put it back in her bag. Her shoes and socks she left tied around the strap, but she tucked the sweater into the bag itself. ”Why do I have the feeling you don’t just mean, go down to the lake and jump in?” she asked, grinning. Slinging the bag over her shoulder, Jo stuffed her wand in its usual place, lifting up her shirt to wedge it into the waistband of her skirt. Then she skipped along, falling into step with Sebastian.

Sebastian was taken aback when Jo asked if he and Romulus had been good friends. Biting his lip nervously, Sebastian considered his reply. Good friends was an understatement, Romulus and Sebastian had been best friends since Sebastian's first year and had remained so until Romulus' disappearance. During their fourth year, Romulus had developed a prejudice towards Muggle born and had taken to cursing them. Sebastian had been the only exception to this rule and had been grateful, for Romulus was particularly cruel to his victims.
"Yeah..." Sebastian started nervously. "We were good friends.
Sebastian had begged Romulus to reconsider his choice of dueling their friend, who had now become Romulus' adversary. Romulus had ignored him all the way down to the Entrance Hall, where they soon found who they were looking for. A furious argument had started between the two and Sebastian had looked between them, unsure of what to do or say. After some remarks about the Dark Lord, Romulus had drawn his wand and found one to his throat. The two separated, duelling in the Entrance Hall with many onlookers.
The two seemed to be equal and after much frustration, Romulus had had fired off the killing curse. It missed, but only by a hair and hit a Professor. Almost instantly, an alarm was raised and the students began to flee but some remained while the duel continued. Aurors soon arrived and a much larger duel began, with Romulus' Death Eater followers joining in the fray. The duel got larger and Romulus was forced to flee, having killed Aurors, students, and his own Death Eaters.
Ever since then, Sebastian had received the occasional owl from Romulus and didn't waste any time replying. He retrieved the photograph from Jo's sketchpad and replaced it in his pocket, trying his best not to look glum. He soon forgot about Romulus as Jo's laughter filled his ears when she saw the swans. He couldn't help but smile, her laugh was cute. When he jumped down from the tree, Jo soon followed him. He did his best not to watch her skip as he lead the way to their destination.
Sebastian carefully navigated his way towards the bridge, doing his best to remember the way. He'd crossed it a few times but had never jumped for it and felt butterflies stir up in his stomach. He'd probably be more likely to do this with Romulus, but he didn't want to look like a chicken in front of Jo.They arrived and Sebastian ran his hand along the smooth stone of the bridge. He looked down, smiling at the water below and took a deep breath to cool his nerves. He was normally the adventurous sort but he realized this way higher up than he had anticipated.
Kicking off his sandals and removing his shirt, he carefully stepped up onto the side of the bridge. The wind blew on his, tickling his flesh as he stood on the bridge glaring down at the water. He could see some students on the shore and he wondered if they noticed him. He turned to face Jo, extending his hand to her. He let himself smile, not being self conscious about his body at all.
"Shall we jump together? He asked.

[/div] nothing but clouds,
He seemed nervous when she asked about Romulus. Jo had the vague impression of why, but couldn’t place it exactly. She remembered there had been some sort of scandal- but Dumbledore had, for whatever reason, covered it up, erasing memories from witnesses until no one was sure exactly what had happened. But Jo got the impression that, for whatever reason, he’d missed one.
And that one was biting his lip, acknowledging uncertainly that he and Romulus Parry had been good friends. Jo didn’t know why Dumbledore would have missed someone- but she wasn’t sure she wanted to know, either. She shrugged, trying to pass off her confusion as nonchalance. ”He seemed okay. I mean, he didn’t hex me or anything, so I guess he was all right in my books. What’s he doing at Brighton Pier? It’s a great place- but the usual season is in the summertime.”
Sebastian’s face was melancholy and rather pensive, but he perked up a little when she laughed. Taking the photo from her sketchbook, he folded it and put it back in his pocket again. She noticed the careful manner in which he did, and in that moment, knew that Sebastian the Hufflepuff had been very fond indeed of Romulus Parry. Her heart went out to him. Romulus had left school following the incident no one could remember, seemingly vanishing into thin air. She was surprised to hear that he’d been writing to Sebastian. Obviously he wasn’t afraid of getting in trouble.
She put it out of her mind as she hopped down, focusing on the moment. It was a sunny fall afternoon, warm for November. If she closed her eyes, she could pretend it was late June. Jo followed Sebastian, curiosity bubbling in her stomach. This was no ordinary swimming session, she could see that. She waved to a few of her friends passing by, her feet brushing the lush green grass. Whenever she stopped, she couldn’t resist digging her toes into the earth. Jo had inherited her father’s love of plants- though her specialty lay more with the magical varieties. As Jo realized where Sebastian was leading her, she laughed again. ”I like the way you think,” she said, bare feet slapping the stone of the bridge. Sebastian ran his hand along the side, taking a deep breath. Jo grinned. He was nervous.
The Hufflepuff boy removed his sandals and shirt, and stepped onto the side, looking down at Jo and offering a hand. He smiled, not seeming to mind her roving eyes. He was well-muscled, though not as much as some, and very pale. Jo set her bag down, waving her rowan wand over it to guard the bag against thieves, and then over herself. Mostly out of a wish to say that she could, if she wanted to, she’d learned a spell that changed her uniform to her favorite swimsuit. With a few sky-blue sparks leaking out of her wandtip, and the sudden smell of sea air, she tapped herself. Instantly she was standing on the bridge in her blue plaid board shorts, and her favorite navy top. The suit revealed plenty of tanned, freckled skin, but it was comfortable and easy to move in. Grinning, Jo strapped her wand to her leg and took the offered hand.
”On three?” she asked, beaming. ”This is a fantastic idea, by the way… one- two- three!”
Jo jumped, unable to keep herself from laughing on the way down. Her hair streamed out behind her as she fell, landing in the water with a huge splash. She smiled as the water hit her, releasing her breath in a long, relieved sigh. It had been far too long since she’d been in the water. She broke the surface, gasping with laughter. The water was, surprisingly enough, relatively warm. Jo wiped her eyes, grinning. ”Seb, you’re a genius,” she said happily. Pulling out her wand, Jo cast a Bubble-Head Charm around herself, then turned to him. ”Let’s explore some,” she suggested, sticking her wand back.
