Gawky and menacing, Severus is like a bad-tempered insect in some obscure corner of the room. He's too vicious and nasty to risk getting close enough to squash him.

At school, he proudly wears his Slytherin robes, but the rest of his clothes are old and much too big for him. He's not exactly rolling in riches, but by his 7th year, it was rather a moot point. Everyone knew he wasn't exactly stylish, but they also knew his skills with magic were unparalleled. All in all, he felt it a good trade off.

Severus gives off an aura of danger, but being so thin and pale, almost sickly-looking, makes him seem a bit more pathetic at times. His attitude is fearsome and his wit sharp enough to ward off any contender, but, occasionally, one might possibly glimpse the small part of Severus that is still just a person.

His nose and his hair have been a near-constant source of amusement for the Marauders. Though he is still young, he has grown into his large nose somewhat, and it no longer protrudes from his face quite as dramatically as it had previously. He can to nothing to salvage his greasy, unkempt hair. It is a result of genetics and near-constant hovering over a potion, and, though Severus tried to do something about it in a rare moment of frustrated vulnerability, it remains unchanged.

overall personality, A typical awkward teenager in looks and clumsiness, Severus Snape is anything but typical in personality. A rebellious and independent boy, he views the world negatively and it views him the same way. His abuse at home and his abuse at school has hardened him into clearly defining a black and white slate of "who is bad" and "who is not". He has, as of late, become more and more sympathetic to the cause of the Death Eaters.The evidence of the dillution of purity in the Wizarding World is all around, and Severus is seduced by the allure of supposed peace and prosperity.

Severus is a hard worker. His focus is absolute when he is doing his homework, reading a book, or brewing a potion. Being easily distracted is a weakness, as far as he is concerned, though his practice of getting lost in his work has brought about many instances of torment that could have been avoided if he'd been more vigilant.

Quick to anger, even the slightest insult from the 'fabulous four' Gryffindors is enough to send him into a rage. However, his encounters with the Marauders have taught him better control with other people. Unless he has a vendetta, he resorts to humiliation and disdain before he resorts to anger. It pleases him to feel superior to people he doesn't like; so, he is often condescending to the lower forms.

He is a genius at Potions. The only other who matches him in talent is Lily Evans. Her prowess makes him jealous and conflicted, since it seems to him that they will never again share common ground. In addition, Slughorn is very partial to her, and, though he praises Severus' work too, he doesn't quite treat them the same. To be less-liked by his own Head Of House stings him, but he has convinced himself he cares nothing for the opinions of others.

As far as romance is concerned, Severus only has eyes for one girl, who only has eyes for another-boy-who-is-not-Severus. He is resigned to the fact that he has done irreparable damage to their friendship and his anti-social nature will not allow him to attempt to repair it, but to see them together continues to leave his body tormented with waves of bitter pain.

mother & family, Eileen Prince came from a long line of pureblooded ancestry, but chose to break from her family to marry a Muggle. She was cut off from her family and considered a blood traitor.
father &family, Tobias Snape's family was never around, but his friends were rowdy warehouse-worker types who drank a lot. The Snapes were extremely poor, but mostly anonymous in both the Wizarding and Muggle worlds.

Severus Snape was born to loving parents on 9 January 1960 on a cold winter's morning. His mother, Eileen Snape, was a typical housewife who had the aura of a lady, but the surroundings of a junkyard. However, she never complained as many women of her caliber might have. She truly loved her husband and supported him in all he did. His father, Tobias Snape, was an artist. He enjoyed abstraction and surrealism, which made him the mockery of all his compatriots at that time. He painted and sculpted, occasionally calling on his wife's talent with magic to give his pieces unnatural qualities which thrilled him and confused others. In order to feed his family, he worked as a construction laborer doing menial roadwork. He would often come home exhausted, and he received very little pay.

A skinny wisp of a child, Severus' early childhood was a time of relative happiness, even though his family was destitute even then. By five years old, Severus was exhibiting signs of being a wizard, much to his parents' delight. His parents attempted to have another child, but the baby girl was born dead. Crushed by this, Severus' mother was constantly weeping over the loss. Eileen was always sickly, but soon thereafter she fell seriously ill, to the point where she was bedridden. That was when Severus' troubles began.

Grief over his baby's passing drove Tobias Snape to take up drinking again, a pastime he had put down since his marriage to Eileen. However, loss hanging over him and the stress of caring for his sick wife caused him to resort to it once again. He would often leave at night and not come back until morning. Severus overheard many a fight where his mother hysterically sobbed about being cheated on.

Severus himself was caught in the middle of things. Unable to fully understand the situation, he often retreated to the solitude of his room or outside to play in the park or doodle on scraps of old newspapers. He learned to love art from his father, but the man, though he was already irritable, became increasingly critical of his son.

Following the baby's death, Tobias began to resent Severus. The boy learned a great deal of magic from his mother, and Tobias began to expect things that were impossible of his son. He dropped hints about curing Eileen's sickness with a potion. Being only seven, Severus was eager to please, but too ignorant to succeed. He simply did not know anything about magical medicine. However, as Tobias' drinking got worse, he began to despise his odd, serious son.

Severus' only refuge from the turmoil at home was the time he spent with Lily Evans. They became good friends, and he escaped home frequently to see her and terrorize her sister. Even then he was forming his opinions about those who were magical and those who weren't. Most of the influence came from his father, who he avoided like the plague.
